Looks as if AMD are all but discontinuing the Athlon XP series. Not fully sure but this is based on the above info.

Actually the 3.4 GHz Prescott ("E") models on the 90 nm process are still not yet available. However, there are 3.4 GHz ("C") Northwood Chips presently available.

Intel is having problems with the Prescott overheating, and are currently developing a new processor core design or "stepping" of the Prescott.

It is important to note that Intel is the first major CPU company to release 90 nm products. Therefore it is expected to run into some issues.

Well, I'll rescue myself by saying Now meant March :P

so my mobo (478) doesn't support future prescotts? asus says it does. does socket 775 fit in my mobo?

Nope, no 775 for you I'm afraid.

The 775 motherboards have different pins etc, and have sticky out ones. Go read the article on Tom's Hardware about Alderwood and Grantsdale motherboards.

Of course, we could be <s>factual</s> cruel and say that it&#39;s because they are in a rush to get them out before they have tested the new chips. Hmm, I seem to remember a software company doing things like that. Called themselves microshaft or something.

Quite easily. I had my old 1.4 Ghz with a GeForce 2 for 2 years. If I&#39;d have only gone for a graphics card upgrade it would have served me a year longer. My granny needed a PC though, so I got this beatiful FX51.
