Any Wizes Please Help In Deleting A Dat File

I have a problem. Any suggestions are welcomed.

I was downloading a file which was almost complete and the last few bits were taking forever so I copied the dat file to a different folder and renamed it as avi.
(i didn't however change anything about the actuall name of the file which is a bunch of numbers)

It seems however that the file hadn't downloaded the indexing component so i was only able to view it via avi preview.

Meanwhile I had completed downloading the original file.

Now in order to free disk space I tried deleting the copied renamed dat file and received an error deleting file message another program might be using it.

I tried all possibilites : closed all programs, disconnected my internet, burned and deleted the original completed file, restarted my computer, Nothing works.

I am unable to do anything with this file except view it through avi preview.

Cant move it, delete, or rename it.



Please help as I am a sharer with a small hard drive and this is taking up useful space.

1. Open up regedit
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"
Close regedit and try to delete the file now

or try navagating it to klite or nero and delete it inside of them :lol:

Go to Start -> Run and type "cmd." Type "cd "[folder name"." Then, type "del "[file name]" /s." Type "exit" to quit.

About deleting stubborn AVI-files...

This very easy way have been working out great for me:

1) Create a new folder (example: CrapAVI)
2) Move Your stubborn file that won't let itself be deleted to CrapAVI
3) Delete the folder CrapAVI, and the file in it will go to.

By doing this You don't have to mess around in the Registry.

yours may be a slightly different situation, because if you can not delete the file it sure can not be moved either because you will get the same error.

Yeah, You might be right. There are so many variables.

Some more info: I'm running XP Pro/Admin rights. If the stubborn file resides in the folder "Shared" I'm creating the new folder "CrapAVI" in the same "Shared" folder. Then I move the undeletable, stubborn file to "CrapAVI" and finally delete the folder "CrapAVI". How strange it might seem, it works for me.

I stumbled upon this way of handling undeletable AVI-files via an internet search engine when I first happended to encounter this problem myself. I thought that I just as well might give it a try (before diving into the Registry), although I didn't expect it to work. I was rather surprised to see that it worked out without a hitch.
