Need For Speed Underground Drag Race Question

I need for speed, there is a drag race challengge , and im tottally confused on how to play this, i can only go like 38 MPH , and engine blows after a awhile. Can anyone please tell me how to do this please?

u have to shift gears.. check ur controls

i looked in the controls menu and i didnt see it...
