Why do Americans call their version Football? The ball spends more time in the hands of the players
What you call soccer is called football in a lot of places
There's a sport called handball they should change the name to something else
or a better idea call football American Rugby
It's Rugby Football actually. You will hear them describe the players as a "good footballer".
It's Association Football, the "soccer" comes from the association part. It wasn't an Americanism, it was probably the English who thought it up in the first place. You can just hear them say "that chap is a damn fine soccer exponent". Harks back to the Raj one would have thought.
maybe they called it soccer because the players sock the ball, or the ball makes a 'sock' sound when it's kicked
American footbal is probably callde fooball because its an evolution of the original game, cricket
edit: holy crap, i can't type
:lol:Quote:

Yep, I can see how cricket could evolve into American Football.
maybe because The game was originally played with a rbber ball put inside a sock, so the word soccer could have been coined from sock?

If William Web Ellis had gone to my school he'd have got the shit kicked out of him by the games teacher for picking up the ball and running with it, not have a whole new game invented for him.Quote:
