i'm really, really thinking it's time to upgrade to a dvd-rw! does anyone know when the 12x come out? got a link? which dvd-rw's are the best? and why? does it matter? is lite-on a good one to get? maybe plextor? what does dvd dual drive mean? example
was thinking of either this one or this one. does it matter?
oh, another question. what is the difference between dvd-rw+ and dvd-rw- ?

16x should be out by the end of the year, and that will be the last major advancement for a while. 16x (according to what ive heard) is the fastest safe speed for the disc and the motor. any faster and the disk will shatter with even the most miniscule imperfection (like a 0.2mm chipping from the inner edge of the DVD)
they can only increase speeds by adding more lasers or by sabilizing motors+disks, which will boost disk prices by quite a lot (ever wonder why the highest DVD-ROM speed is 16x?) so wait till late this year and we should see 16x drives. get 1 then.

hmm, i always did wonder why they werent making faster dvd-rom drives...i always though that it was becuase at teh moment, theyre absolutely useless :huh: well, unless your trying to rip the dvds, then u want them to go faster...
+r and -r are kind of 2 different types of disks
in general players will play either, but to be safe go for one which does both.
to burn a full disk @ 8x takes like 15minutes (i think, though my heads gone blank) so tbh its fast enough really.
I have a lite-on 401s, which I have firmware flashed (run a couple of windows progs to change the burners internal workings) to make it into an 811. This is easy to do, and may save you a few quid (though it does invalidate the warranty - think overclocking it)
Whatever you decide, make sure you try loads of different types/makes of disk and settle upon one which works the best for you.
The easiest way to think of the differences between Dvd+r and Dvd-r is to think in terms of them having different filesystems (like fat vs. ntfs)
The Dvd-r standard is also more universal to the Dvd-rom standard and that is why it can be read in more Dvd Players.

oh and btw the lgx8 dvdram drive rocks man , i got one and it works great, biggest problem is it hard to get a hold of 8xcompatable media atm , 4x media is all i can get
here when u do get a DVD burner look for a DVD±RW drive
<s>mist</s> must have the ± tag. that means that it can burn both -R(W)s and +R(W)s
DVD-Ram is outdated and unless u have a really good use for it dont get it. if u do intend on getting it, u are looking for a burner that supports DVD-Multi (as in, can burn -Rs, -RWs, and -RAMs) and make sure that it does +R(W)s as well)

you will find all dvd-ram drives also support dvd+-rw
