i google'd this and got some ideas about running CHKDSK and thats wat im about to do to try to get the problem solved.
yes so far searching microsoft and gogle ive found that that error means something is wrong with the ntfs.sys file. Is your dads computer running ntfs? if he is then this is problably the problem. try running recovery console (start using the windows xp setup disc, then selct recovery console in the setup options) then type in chkdsk C:\ /p then restart, if it doesnt help then it says you may have to delete the partition, recreate and format it.
