A question about Ares and spyware
Quote:
Q.Does Ares have spyware?
Ares is 100% free but comes bundled with optional NavHelper software by NavExcel
NavHelper is a browser object which allows to enter search keywords directly in the address bar of Internet Explorer. If you don't want to install it, just opt-out while you install Ares. If you have installed the browser object but you don't want it anymore, just go to control panel->add/remove programs, remove NavHelper and restart your computer.
I just installed Ares Lite Edition, and at no point during the installation was I asked to install/not install NavHelper. Just if I wanted a desktop shortcut, nothing about NavHelper.
I don't notice anything funny with Internet Explorer, there is nothing in add/remove programs, and my HiJackThis log doesn't have anything called NavHelper or anything unknown that could be NavHelper.
Should I be worried? :paranoid:
Re: A question about Ares and spyware
nar you downloaded the lite-version and i think the regular version has the navhelper... no need to worry

antispyware program and hijackthis.
same way you remove other spyware.
unless there's a thingy in add/remove programs for it.
Re: A question about Ares and spyware
both links i gave provide removal instructions
Re: A question about Ares and spyware
hmmm I've been using Ares forever (Lite Edition), and none of my spyware apps ever find anything about NavHelper.
Re: A question about Ares and spyware
This is the main reason you should always do a Custom install rather than a Typical install with Ares.
Then you get to choose installation of NavHelper... or not.

I wasn't asked to pick between a Typical or Custom install either. I guess its because I'm using the Lite Edition?
Oh well, all scans show no signs of NavHelper.
