Which encoder is faster?
"TMPGenc 2.5 plus" or "CCE SP 2.5 and Avisynth 2.5"?

If it's TMPGenc 2.5 plus, then also...

What's the real purpose of Rate Control Method?
Is it really worth having it set to 2-pass VBR(VBR), or is just a waste of time? It does double the amount of time required to encode to MPEG2.... that's all I know

Also, I'm encoding 24 anime episodes (whole season) to a dvd and each one was 200mb when I started. Now they are all going to be 800mb each seeing that the first two I've finished encoding using this guide: (http://www.easy-answers.com/how-to/anime-dvd/menu.asp) are that big.

I've read that Motion search precision maintains good quality when set to "High Quality", but is it worth it if I'm going to be using DVD Shrink to fit em all on one disk... or maybe 5 seeing the way the files sizes have increased :(

I was hoping for all 24 on one 4.7gb dvd because the download was only 5gb total. I was going to only leave the english audio stream, remove the subtitles, and slice out the intros-n-credits that are all the same anyways. This should take off atleast 500mb...allowing me to fit them on one dvd. Any ideas?

you could look into a kdvd and fit them on 1 or 2 dvdr's.

Yea, CCE is very complicated and I'm afraid I might mess something up. Tmpgenc was very straitfoward...and easy to configure based on the guide.

CCE SP 2.50 is hands down the faster encoder and it also has the advantage of not crashing on crc errors like tmpgenc does. Its best to use CCE in a scripted app, like dvd2svcd/dvd2dvd, or dvdrebuilder.

I have ripped about 3 vids per week for a couple years now, so I speak from some experience. With my pentium 4 3.2 gig, I can rip a 2 hr vid, using 3-pass setting, in about 6 hours with CCE. With tmpgenc, it takes over 12 hours. I use tmpgenc all the time for its mpeg tools, but as an encoder, its really inferior.

The option of getting a dvd player that plays divX/Xvid avi's is a good one. No matter how good your encoder is you'll end up with (a) quality loss due to re-compression and (b) if you do convert it to mpeg2 compression you'll end up with bigger files. DVD-rebuilder with CCEsp is the best option and there is a plug-in callled rb-opt which will enable you to do a Q-pass and thus get VBR quality with a single pass. It is worth taking time to encode.

I agree - having a xvid/divx player is the way to go. I just got as Philips 642 for less than $60 and it plays 'em like a charm. The only one it wouldn't play was a qpel coded xvid. It's great... you DL, burn directly and play! No encoding necessary.
