Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
a couple of weeks ago, Hong Kong based online retailer Lik-Sang claimed that Nintendo planned to announce a redesigned Nintendo DS on January 16th, 2005. this claim was met with denials from Nintendo's American & European branches.
NOA: "we have nothing to announce at this time."
http://ds.ign.com/articles/681/681200p1.html
NOE: "pure rumour and speculation."
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/16/ni...s-ds-redesign/
January 16th passed uneventfully. 10 days later, this popped up on Nintendo Of Japan's website:
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/news/060126.html
Lik-Sang got ONE DIGIT wrong in their date. the announcement happened on January 26th, rather than January 16th.
note to Nintendo: nice move, slick. way to piss off the customers who went ahead & bought the old design between the 16th and the 26th, based on your official "a sexier new model is not going to be announced soon" bullshitz.

Re: Nintendo DS Lite -- Redesign
That sucks for all the people who bought a DS within those 10 days... way to go Nintendo..
So the new DS is going to look like this?
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/news/060126.jpg
It looks pretty neat...
-
Re: Nintendo DS Lite -- Redesign
yep. pretty difficult to see what the actual difference in size will be, but i suppose it will prolly be less thick than the old DS. if this means people or stores are going to start getting rid of the old DS at lower prices, i guess i might be interested in that. the new one looks good, but i just don't wanna pay $100+ for a handheld console.
and according to that Nintendo Of Japan announcement, the DS Lite is scheduled to go on sale in Japan on March 2nd. not sure when it will arrive in the rest of the world. prolly soon afterwards, if not on the same date.

Re: Nintendo DS Lite -- Redesign
Hmmm... it might be a while before it hits the US...
There have been so many pictures of the DS redesigned... like concept pictures... it's nice to finally (sort of) see what it'll really look like...
Some I've seen actually look pretty cool, like this one:
http://img528.imageshack.us/my.php?i...inal5se4ew.jpg
and this one:
http://img454.imageshack.us/my.php?i...revblog1eh.jpg
It'd be cool to see people selling the older ones for less than $100 bucks... it'd actually consider getting one...
EDIT: Hmm... less bulkier?

Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
Fucking nobs. I bought a DS at the weekend. Wankers wankers wankers wankers wankers...
I should be able to take it back since most shops have a 9 or so day no quibble returns... But the new one costs more, may not be able to use flash carts I want to buy, and its March.

I'm almost happy to see Nintendo fall. Their willingness to simply be different amounts to stupidity.
The moment Sony entered the market they stole Nintendo's crown and never looked back. The bad part, Nintendo continues to sink into mediocrity. They didn't embrace DVD for fear of piracy yet I have 10 GC titles compared 10x that in Xbox and PS2 titles (bought) each. Way to stomp piracy.
I tell you what. If all Nintendo has to offer on the Revolution is GC graphics, some gimmick games using their new remote, and playing old titles they can go fuck themselves and the best thing they can do is be bought or turn into a software company.
The Dreamcast was actually a good system and look what happened.
Nintendo survives on Pokemon dung fumes. What a shitter.

Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
Yeah... the whole idea of having two screens... well... what's the point? Most of the DS games work like this: one of the screens shows the game, the other screen shows your status... like Castlevania...
http://www.gamerdad.com/images/Castlevania_DS_2.jpg
What's the point? Why not just press start to see the status/map screen? Why not get rid of the second screen, make the DS smaller, and reduce the price... I guess some people are just too damn lazy to just press start...
I'd rather have one great looking widescreen, instead of two smaller ones, especially when most games only need one screen...

EDIT: Damn... really... just use the D-Pad to steer you car...

Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
Sega Game Gear, Atari Lynx and Neo Geo Pocket all had better graphics abilities than Game Boy. PSP has better graphics abilities than Nintendo DS. but what was there to play on those other systems, and what is there to play on PSP? PSP just doesn't have PSP gamez, it doesn't have games that are distinctly PSP. as in "this game feels like it was meant to be played on a PSP." it has ports, ports, ports, and more ports of PS2 games. it has games that feel like they were meant to be played on a PS2. which i suppose is really exciting to some people, but not to me.
not that GBA and DS don't have their fair share of ports too, but they also have plenty of original material too. see Jacker's example: an all-new Castlevania game for DS, not just a conversion of a Castlevania game that you could already play on 3 other consoles. and that's what PSP needs: actual portable games, a broader selection with a broader appeal, not just games for the guy who always wished he could play all his PS2 games on a handheld system. there prolly is not much chance of a good 2D Castlevania game being released on PSP, though, as Sony apparently says "3D ONLY." or is it "ports of 3D PS2 games only"?
and yeah, the selection of games on N64 was poor, the selection of games on GameCube was poor, the selection of games on Revolution will probably be poor. but GBA and DS do not have that problem at all. PSP is in danger of becoming the BetaMax of 3D handheld game consoles, if its selection of games doesn't seriously improve.
also: THIS IS NOT A PSP THREAD lol

I know what you speak of with the games.
No other system came out as strong as the PSP did. It already has a fan base that has crossed, not the usual GB game players, but folks who never thought to get a portable player.
I think the DS has more to fear here.
Market share has been taken away and it's only getting worse for the DS. I have more than one console but won't consider getting 2 portables (unless of course hot (or a super sale) or modded at a great low price.
It's a matter of time before a unique Castlevania hits the DS and so forth.
Compared to the PSP, the DS is a piece of shit with the redeeming quality of backward compatibility.
The Betamax comparison doesn't work because the PSP is not essentially the same system as a DS with one minor difference. You see Beta's only flaw was recording time. It had a noticeably better picture and more compact tapes.
The PSP may not have as many unique games yet but how long will backward compatibility trump a superior portable game console with an established game giant behind it?
Sony, unlike Microsoft has a great ability to garner good exclusive games.
...and the PSP plays movies, ffs. (I personally think buying movies that only play on a portable is incrrrrredibly stupid but that hasn't stopped folk from doing it, they cost the same as DVDs:ermm: )
edit: found a deja vu thread

Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
People who already bought a DS before the redesign shouldn't worry too much because the only differences are it's lighter, smaller, and has a brighter backlight. The only tweak that they did matters (IMO) is the brighter backlight. You can never go wrong with that.

I thought the better redesign "jump" was the GBA to the SP. That was noice.
So far I've only played other folks portables and gave them as gifts.
One was the Gameboy Color that I got on super sale, the other was a PSP I got for $100 last year.
I wanted a PSP for myself but the fella only had one. When he got more in, I was unavailable so I missed out. I shoulda prepayed him since I knew him well.:(

oh i dont doubt that Sony has the money, the connections and even the creativity of their own in-house development studios, to get a greater variety of games (and unique exclusives) onto PSP. but what they need to do is make the effort, which they haven't really done so far imho.

This somehow became a PSP vs DS thread. :P
I get what you mean though... the PSP's game lineup hasn't been all that great... but it's not bad also... I personally don't mind ports of PS2 games, as long as the final outcome isn't bad. I mean... I can't carry a PS2 and TV in my pockets... so having them on my PSP sounds good...
But yeah... it'd be nice to see more original games on the PSP... especially right now.. there are more UMD movies then there are games... hopefully this changes within the next few months...

Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
i like my ds, but the only reason i bought it cuz of it's backwards compatibility. i have lots of gb games. also, if something does cum out for the ds (said castlevania) i already have one. i pretty much just use a portable system for when i'm on the road, plane or visiting with mom. when i'm at home or going to work or something like that i don't bother with a portable system. i do believe the psp is a better system, but that doesn't make it a better system. if u know what i mean. the ds cumming out with a new version is dumb imo. they should think about adding some sort of internal mp4 player to compete even more with the psp. even though the ds has sold over 700 million more units (worldwide) than the psp. imo, the psp only has movies going for it. gay. the ds' life is just starting and more games will follow as i'm hoping the same for the psp. i'll eventually get a psp when the fucker cums down in price. $250 is to high for my blood. i'd rather get a xbox2 than a psp for that price. that's me.
also, @ busyman, the dreamcast was GREAT! ...and a better system than the ps2!

Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
The fact that nintendo is making another model, just goes to show how much they like make money off the same shit. Look at gameboy advance, gameboy sp, and gameboy mini (sp?) .
-
Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
I'm happy that there is simply another formidable player in the portable market.
The fact the Sony came out swinging is a good sign.
I don't like Nintendo much right now anyway because of their refusal to adapt.
The Revolution doesn't have me hyped in the least....even if it was $50.

Well I was talking about the internet but I see they did try back around the 64DD time period. However, that wasn't released over here.
Funny that when broadband caught on, Nintendo's delving into any online gaming went the other way.
Not a sign of good business.

Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
nintendo have pretty much got online play perfected now though.
the accessibility is almost as simple as singleplayer games.
also, animal crossing: wild world is the only true next generation game IMO. it just integrates multiplayer and singleplayer so perfectly
-
Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
The PA guys seem to think the DS is much better than the psp, and they usually know their shit.
The new one looks nicer, been reluctant to buy any new purely-for-gaming portables, but if the DS can handle old GB games I may buy one. Can it?
This new one looks a lot like the old game n' watch stuff we used to play, way back when
-
Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
it can do advance games, but not GBC or earlier.
the DS is definately proving it's worth now with tony hawks, animal crossing, advance wars and in a month and half; metroid prime "we got the controls right this time" hunters :01:
-
Re: Nintendo DS Lite Redesign
Not sure I'm buying one then, I've got a lot of the classic GB stuff, but nothing more recent.
But Advance wars is a good game...
