Stickin it to the neighbors

I've got some neighbors who just won't turn down their stereo. Sometimes it goes on for extended amounts of time like today for 4+ hours. This isn't at a volume where I can just slightly hear it, but often so loud that if done early enough, it will wake me from sleeping even though it's coming from the opposite side of the apartment. So loud that even turning on the TV or my own radio doesn't drown it out. So loud that I can understand the lyrics of what they're listening to.

I've been over there on several occasions and requested that the music be turned down. Sometimes they'll turn it down a notch or two but never to a satisfactory level, and the conversation comes with a healthy dose of attitude. At this point, they know it bothers me (and others?) but obviously don't care.

Numerous complaints to apartment manager have done nothing. I've been told flat out that they will not evict anyone based on noise complaints alone.

What's left to do? This has been going on for at least a year now.

I've given the Anarchist's Cookbook a quick read and don't see anything relative in there.

I've considered going outside and unplugging their power meter to disconnect their power and possibly taking the meter with me. That would put them out of commission for at least a day or so, but would not want to be caught doing that.

Also, since the office has already informed me that they will not evict tenants for noise violations, I've considered buying a cheap stereo receiver and large speaker to put against out shared wall and crank it up every day when I leave for work.

Any ideas on battling these irritants?

Get a bigger stereo

Kidnap their pets and/or children. Hold them to ransom until your demands are met.

Knock on their door, stark naked but adorned with a cocked hunting rifle, and ask them in a falsetto voice if they wouldn't mind turning the stereo down.

I'm thinking that's the best course of action for now. I'm going to stop by the office one more time on Monday and let them have it. If they remain firm on their stance of ignoring loud music, I'm going to inform them to expect the situation to worsen, as I'll be fighting fire with fire. :sneaky:

Alternatively, I guess moving might be an option? And I'm sure you must have some sort of environmental pollution laws and enforcement. You could try calling the police. Make sure in the meantime you keep a record of when you go over and complain and to who.

Invite them out 'hunting' and shoot the fuck out of them by 'accident' like.

or

2. Go buy a house ffs. The market is frigging shit for sellers and the fed cut interest rates to 3% so you should be able to manage the 5% you'd most likely get from a lender.

Low cost house plus low rate mortgage = means buy now, toopid

2. As for buying a house, I won't be able to afford a house (where I want to live) until my next promotion. As for being a buyers market, it may be in DC, but damn sure isn't in Austin. This is still one of the fastest growing parts of the country and the cost of housing/taxes/HOA here is crazy high.

If I were still in Houston I would own a home by now, but if your address is listed as "Austin", it's gonna cost ya.

I thought about going to Home Depot and filling their deadbolt full of quick drying silicon a dozen times or so, but that won't send any signal to them about the music - that's the point.

I think a speaker to the wall is going to be my best bet. Especially since the apartments have already told me they'd do nothing about it.

I think it all depends on their age. From what you've said so far they seem to be 20ish, and really immature.

1) Make the fire alarm go off, as they leave their room and head for the exit sneak in to it and sabotage their stereo, I dont know how but maybe throw water on it and say it was on fire and you were just trying to help as you know how much they love that stereo. :D

2) Make a deal with them, give them one porn movie a day to keep it off for that day. :shifty:

3) Dont the other tenants mind? If they do then complain about it together, write a letter or something to your landlord and get everyone's signature on it. If this isnt the case then ask the bastards to put the volume high enough so it annoys the neighbours, do this a few times and then get the petition signed by everyone.

4) Do some damage in the building and blame it on them, but dont be too obvious and say something like "I saw these guys doing something there" :)

5) Pray that they die. :01:
