Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
I am looking for a few good, truly scary movies, that are well filmed (no shaking cam type genre stuff ) with good acting and original story lines. ( or at least as much as is possible for a hollywood or indie release ) 2013 was a bad year for a good creepy show and what I have read and watched so far has left me wanting. IMDB is not to be trusted. I have no place to turn but here; for this can be, at times, one frightening forum. What better place then to get a few gems of possibilities. Obscure is most welcome... bear in mind I have seen most of the classics...
Cheers!

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
I am not a strong fan of the genre (mainly due to a high disappointment ratio*), but I do give it an occasional stab...
I'd suggest these for various reasons, mostly their attempts to be somewhat original.
No One Lives (2012), The Conjuring (2013), and Warm Bodies (2013)

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
Are we talking The Shining scary,Marathon Man scary or Haute Tension scary?
Anyway you've probably seen them but two from Guillermo del Toro ,The Devil's Backbone and Chronos.
-
Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
I'd also give a nod to The Human Race (2013).

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?

Thanks...
Saw Warm Bodies a few months ago... liked the love story zombie twist. The Conjuring didn't do it for me (or my companion rather) and I never saw it through to the end... might not have given it a real chance. I will try No One Lives. Read some of the reviews... looks like it could be worthy.
@ Idol
Yes I would say "a la, The Shining...
Your suggestions read well... no I have not seen them... for unfortunately, the company I am keeping does not care for subtitles (God Damn...The truth is... she's a red neck... what can I say...I am trying to up her game somewhat.... somehow she has a hold on me...)

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
The Exorcist
(...only if you've never seen it or read the book and have 5.1 audio copy, a decent system you can crank up the volume on it.) :alien:
(Scariest shit I have ever seen from back in the early '70's.) :alien:
Edit: (Sorry, I missed the classic bit in the op. Never mind.)

Not surprising Idol finds Spanish men in prison to be thrilling.

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
Most horror movies starting to get old and predictable. Horror games however much more thrilling being that you control the outcome of the situation.

Besides the fact that much of horror is basically derived from not being able to determine the outcome of a situation,I would suggest that since both the current take on horror movies and video games are targeted directly at the same demographic, your conclusion doesn't make a lot of sense.
Regrettably, people seem to forget that 99% of what makes up a good anything scare is the anticipation/buildup to the act (see something like Jaws) and not just a bunch of ludicrously unrealistic CGI bouncing around on screen.
Even someone like Guillermo del Toro who knows a thing or two about horror sometimes forget that and let everything go to fuck with something like Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.
If you begin at the summit then there's no place left to go but down and there is nothing more terrifying than the imagination.
Especially Mary's.

Which covers the other newer genre of "horror" films, i.e., just repulsive for the sake of being repulsive.

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
Okay... add "Oculus" to my list... decent story line & a few jumps.
(I watched it late at night and didn't look into any mirrors before going to sleep.) :alien:

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
I would recommend Insidious 1 and 2. They are the best. :naughty:
-
Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
The absolute best hands down scary movie I've ever watched was Sinister. In all other scary movies I just tend to laugh my arse off. Not this one, it'll keep you on the edge of your seat for sure.

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?

Sorry but "warm bodies" is more like a love comedy than a horror movie. true scary movie would be, "evil dead", or "the conjuring". "the cabin in the woods" is a really good one but not that scary.

Are you speaking of the figure that floated behind the guy that was standing in the hall (Made by sisters' to watch in the dark, and peeking between fingers over eyes)? I thought she was a nun...
Not seeing the following mentioned, I would suggest Let Me In or the original Let the Right One In = "Låt den rätte komma in" (original title)" Swedish spoken with Spanish subs...

Yes, but I believe that the nun could have been a night nurse.
(Anyways... that was the scene that made me jump big time.) :alien:
There are so many flics that are clinkers to mention, but for one scene in them are remarkable or memorable moments for me. :)

There is a similar scene in "Oculus" ...no night nun/nurse, but a similar jump for me. :) I suppose it's just timing... and when they get it right...
you know its right! :yikes:

Isn't The Cabin in the Woods more a really black comedy with a really bad ending?
Also I know that there is no hard and fast rule for the term "cult classic" but I think it more lends itself to movies that didn't really find their audience on their first go around, usually because they reside far outside the box.

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
Wicker Man - original - great ending IMO
-
Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
Maybe look into Occulus, the trailer looks really disturbing.
Also, the Evil Dead (2013) is also pretty bloody looking.

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?
[Rec] (2007). Another Spanish one...

Re: Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?

All the spookiness of Conjuring without Patrick Wilson. Win/Win, me thinks...
