To discuss books, of course. You could argue that you don't need to actually have worlds for music, or movies, or software, or games. But people discuss in those worlds things related to their respective titles.Quote:

I think the question could be how could we not have a Bookworld? We're dedicated to filesharing, which is, essentially, the spread of ideas. The written form is one of the oldest forms of doing that. By simply limiting it to a can, you stop that exchange of ideas. If someone posts...American Gods...for example, there can be no discussion. No debate. No learning the views of others on how they interpret the book, which can be equally if not moreso important than reading the book itself.
How would you expect people to be able to discuss the works of their favourite authours if there is no option for doing so? How would people be exposed to new and different ideas if you don't give them the opportunity to do so? The written word is a very powerful thing. Books have the ability to change the outlook of a person. The book is engrained into our society, so much so that I bet most of the people on this board know that the answer to the meaning of life is 42. People know about Noah's Ark and the Great Flood.
Our films and computer games exist because of books. If Tolkien hadn't been an avid scholar himself, he would have never wrote The Lord of the Rings and his other works. The roleplaying world, as we know it, would likely not exist. If there was no Beowulf, there would be no Lord of the Rings. If there were no Lord of the Rings, there would be no Star Wars. If there were no written tales of heroes and gods, most of what we know about civilizations past would not exist. We know relatively little about the Olmecs, as they had no form of written language. We know scads about the Greeks, because they did have a form of written language.
I could go on. But I won't. I want to see other people's responses to this question before continuing a bit.
Are we such a backwards society that films and computer games are more important than books? I hope not.

that's priceless,yeah right
anyways on a more serious note you did manage to convince me that a place to discuss books is needed
but it may still be good to leave it open to anything that does not fit into other categories
No i read a lot of books irl (fiction 2 to 3 a month, and for work... yak but need to1-2)... so that wasn't my question. But you pretty much answered the question. Really i do wanna understand why people want a bookworld...!
Next question, being an community from all over the world, are there e-books (digital) in all languages?
or just english?
And what exactly would that be? You have hardware. You have software. You have computer games (which is, essentially, just a subset of software). You have music. And you have film.Quote:

The only thing that isn't represented there is "images." But I don't think people would be interested in my collection of Pre-Raphaelite artwork.
If you want porn, you don't need to look too far. Why even bother putting up verified "images," because most of what the faked files are renamed to is porn anyway, and a large selection of the celebrated "celebrity images" are fake, anyway.
:ninja:
Yes. The spread of ideas. The whole filesharing system is based around the spread of ideas. Even the system itself is the realization of someone's idea that media should be readily available. See how ideas shape the world? Not every idea is a good one, but it's in the exchange where we learn. Every song you download has the idea of the songwriter inside. Every film you watch is the director's vision of some idea that captivated him. Every video game you play is the realization of some group of like-minded programmers and graphic artists. Every person you tell to quit leeching, or to upgrade to K++ is recieving your ideas, your advice. Every person who responds in a crude manner to that, well, they have their ideas about what they're doing, and they're expressing them. Whether or not you agree is another matter entirely. This forum is an exchange of ideas. ;) My idea of a Bookworld is obviously quite different than yours. That doesn't make either of us right, or wrong, it's just yet another exchange of ideas. :)Quote:

There certainly are e-books in all sorts of languages. I've got a few in French, myself. I've seen German, Arabic, Hebrew, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, the list goes on. What would be posted may be different, though. I've got a very few e-books in French and Romanian, because I can read those languages. Although, with the Romanian, I tend to end up looking more words up than I should. ;) Most of my books are in English, though.Quote:

I wholeheartedly support having a Bookworld.
MagicNakor is right we have to have a discussion section. How can we exchange opinions and ideas otherwise?? We need more than access to digital books. We need to promote books in ALL forms.
This has already prompted a number of positive replies and surely the powers that be can respond to demand.
WE MUST HAVE A BOOKWORLD!!!!
AND MAKE IT SOON.
:)
You got my vote 100%
Need I say more...
:w00t:
A placed to discuss books would be great.
Although i dont like reading books on the computer screen, verefied hashes would be great so i could download them and print them out.
We need it to discuss books, like said before in this thread.
I'd like to have it for verifieds as well, for ebooks, audiobooks (for the blind!) and comics.
I would never have thought of searching for the very first episode of Superman without the hash from stoi.
This is a great way as well to show people there's more than porn on the Fasttrack network.
Why not including an Internetworld as well and calling it 'Oddworld', as suggested in another thread?
Useful Internetsites are posted pretty much all over the board right now, think of URL's like Speedguide.net, PCPitstop.com, etc...
I like the idea, though it's fraught with difficulty
Someone mentioned other resources (forums), but I think if we had our own we could control the tone so it would reflect the membership and lead to more posts by some of the more "reticent" members. Are such things done on a trial basis? Might be wise, as the range of content will surely be daunting; it could end up being, literally, a library, with all the same logistical considerations-TOUGH!
It would be asking alot of the administration.
I don't have any better arguments for it then were already posted above.
But I would like to say that if Bookworld or Oddworld comes to pass, I promiss not to jump into the next Porn section vote :P (please, someone remind me to keep my hands off next time it pops up ;) )
If that doesn't say it all then I don't know what can convince you :)
Not really any much more than software, or video, or music.Quote:

Jetje, both of your posts have referred to e-books.
Must the Forum be limited to digital media?
I'd go blind if all my reading was on this crappy monitor! (I'm still lusting after ShareDaddy's 80 ft. plasma screen billboard...)
E-books and audio books, yes. At least, this is my impression.
:ninja:
no need for this. this is all we need: dont look here (ha ha gotcha!)
Here is a small selection of books that Baen is offering.
If we are lucky, they will keep this idea alive :)
P.S. This would look a whole lot better if it was moved to Bookworld :P
How about FOODWORLD? Now that would be something.
Foodworld? <_<
Really, what's the word from the mod front on Bookworld?
:ninja:
Because
Us

Persist ;)
Any new news on Bookworld? :D
:ninja:
Food world is under construction as we speak.... In my mind...
Edit: There is a trick to this post.... look carefully.
:D Do you see it?
Yes. Your white is too bright against the background to be truly "invisible." ;)
:ninja:
Well it doesnt look like anything has been decided yet about a bookworld, shame realy, could have been interesting.
Also i have uploaded all my ebooks by author to alt.binaries.ebooks on newsgroups if anyone wants to get them that way, i will be adding my technichal books to free.ebooks.emanuals in the next couple of days as well if you are struggling to find any sources on kazaa.
the more ppl that get them from the newsgroups, unrar them and then share on fasttrack the quicker they will spread, as i tried sharing all of them individually, 2500 files and i think ppl were struggling to find them as there was that many files to search through on my pc. so i decided to upload them to newsgroups in blocks of authors.
We could start a chant!!
"BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD
BOOKWORLD

BOOKWORLD " :D
Come on MODS give us the Bookworld or people will get hurt!!
I think it's a great idea, especially considering it would be a first for the fast trak network (I believe). Go Go Bookworld!
Is that like "go go gadget?"
Hehe, must be some long mod-team chat going on. I think Bender first said he'd post a topic three weeks ago or so.
:ninja:
support bookworld ....sounds like you people are into a wide range of stuff
oops.
