How good are monitors.
I just plugged her into the back of my laptop. No fannying around - it worked straight away.
It's about five years old now but the pic hasn't degraded from when I bought it. All these threads hailing processors and graphic cards, I thumb my nose at them and instead worship the marvel that is my monitor.
How highly do you rate your monitor as a piece of hardware?

Re: How good are monitors.
I respect my monitor, 19" proview, but it wouldn't be shit without my ATI9800 pro all in wonder
-
Re: How good are monitors.
I have a 19" Packard bell monitor.
To me the monitor / mouse are very important, it's the bits you actually use.
I have one of those MS Optical trackball thingy mouse.

Re: How good are monitors.
both the ones i could use seem to be old and dieing, so i have to do a lot of playing with the colours and stuff to make it work  . that gets really annoying switching between tv and monitor

the picture doesn't really show my problem that well but i spent a good two minutes making it

No it's not a monitor, just a mouse.

Re: How good are monitors.
meh. (where's the "STFU manker" option?) :P j/k :P
as RPerry said, a monitor can really be shit w/o proper hardware to support it

Re: How good are monitors.
i have a LG 17", less than a year old, it's great, sharp picture, and true flatness, then my brother got a 19" LCD a few months ago, now i think my monitor is crap
but i kinda agree with JP, my keyboard is my favourite piece of hardware, i have a Logitech Office Internet keyboard, it has more shortcuts than i need, and it's just so comfortable to type with
i vote: meh the fuck up, manker

No the lasery bit is inside, coz it's when you move the big ba' that it moves the cursory thing.
It's got 4 programmable buttons, not including the scroll wheel, which can also be programmed as a button (via the gift of pressing it).
I've got a lasery on the bottom, scrollwheel on the top attached to the laptop, coz i don't like the trackpad thingy.

Re: How good are monitors.
so you have 5 axis and 7 buttons, whereas i only have 4 axis and 3 buttons? man do i feel small :(

You want me to include an option telling God to STFU
Of course, you may be confusing yours truly with God.
Either way ...

Re: How good are monitors.
Double
Btw, further to effy's point, I also find that my monitor is rubbish without a computer attached to it, yet curiously my 42" plasma screen TV (Well, everyone else was bragging) works as a stand-alone.
For the purposes of the poll; TVs > Monitors.

I've got two NTL cable lines going into my house.
One wasn't enough for the two phone lines and 4 tv decoder boxes, to say nothing of the 1.5m broadband and the 5 computers and 2 games consoles which are attached to it via the gift of wirelessness and routerage.
The two freeview decoders work seperately tho'.

and i think you meant monitors > TVs :P (monitor resolution pwns TV res)
question: whats the deal with the plasma?
have heard they feck up after not too long, any truth to that?
didnt wanna go plasma because of that...

http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/p...-lifespan.html
Quote:
The lifespan of plasma TVs is measured relative to the half-life of its phosphor gases. Half-life is the point at which plasma manufacturers posit that the picture brilliance has diminished enough to make a very noticeable difference in picture quality (and possibly merit replacement). Half-life, then, is the true halfway point in the lifespan of the product. Since these gases decay at a constant rate, the color intensity of your TV picture will decay at a rate equal to that of its phosphors. Think of this as phosphoric dissipation. Beginning the moment you turn your plasma TV on, the phosphors encased within its screen begin to slowly dissipate, so less and less of the total phosphoric content is available for ignition. This affects the display's brightness and color saturation levels. After 1000 hours of use, the plasma monitor should have retained about 94% of its original brightness level. After 15,000 to 20,000 hours, the monitor should measure about 68% of its out-of-the-box brightness. Which is to say, about 68% of the phosphors in the TV will be ignited to produce an image. Much also depends upon the contrast ratio setting used to view the unit. If you want a plasma TV to last longer, simply decrease the CONTRAST option in the menu settings. If you tweak the CONTRAST to 100%, you should expect to burn its phosphors out at an increased rate.
As for the specific life spans of individual plasma display units, most manufacturers contend that their TVs last approximately 30,000 hours before reaching their half-lives under "normal" viewing conditions (i.e., with the CONTRAST set at around 50%). Recently, several manufacturers, most notably Sony and Panasonic, have begun to claim that their newest plasma display panels now have half-lives of 60,000 hours. I, for one, am a bit skeptical of such assertions, if only because this would represent a 100% increase in the life of the product. While I realize that much is being done to increase the life spans of plasma TVs (such as increasing the resiliency of green phosphors), I'll believe these figures when I see them achieved in real life, not just theoretically.
From the consumer's perspective, though, the 30,000-hour figure should be comforting, since this is about how long CRTs last. Let's put all this in perspective: Assuming the average American household watches 4 to 6 hours of television per day, a plasma display will last between 13 and 20 years. If you think about it, that's quite a bit of bang for your buck.

Yeah, we knew :P
I still think TVs pwn monitors because they don't require a pc to make them work aaaaand having a 42" monitor would make you look like a pr0n addict whereas having a 42" TV draws admiring glances from the hoi polloi when they pop around for tea and crumpets.
As to the plasma question. I had heard but they wore out quicker than normal TVs but it matched the colour scheme of my lounge :ermm:

Re: How good are monitors.

Most of us 1.5mb broadband users have upgraded to 3mb for no extra cost, you might need another cable for that :P

I don't know if the roll out has reached this area yet. I thought NTL were doing it a bit at a time.
Anyway, weren't they putting a limit on the download per munf.
