Micro$oft at it again
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4717417.stm
"Anyone downloading updates for Windows XP will be required to check that their operating system is genuine.
Security updates are exempt from this in order to prevent people spreading viruses across the internet."
Eh?
What is the diffrence between an "update" & a "security update"? I thought they were all security updates.

Re: Micro$oft at it again
not all updates are security related, but most seem to be. so yea, I see what you mean :)
-
Re: Micro$oft at it again
updates will probably be things like new media player versions, the windows journal viewer thing, etc.
security updates will be anything falling under "critical" in inwdows update.

Re: Micro$oft at it again
I wonder what the policy will be on service packs and such.

Re: Micro$oft at it again
That's crap tho', I have to install XP on my brother's computer again tomorrow, and I'm not sure his key is valid now :(
Do you absolutely have to install something in between sp1 and sp2? 'cos I have installers for those at least.

Re: Micro$oft at it again
Theres posts all thru this forum about changing your PID if you have XP pro corp.

Re: Micro$oft at it again

Just checked with mine but did n't d/l because of this :
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
443 KB , less than 1 minute
The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool enables you to verify that your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine. The tool validates your Windows installation by checking Windows Product Identification and Product Activation status. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.
Ah fuck it I'm going try it whats the worst it can do? You can still get security updates anyway. And the rest from outside sources . :)
Dam buggers you have to enable auto updates if you want to d/l security updates . I hate that but thats the price I'll pay .I refuse to pay, like Ross said a new key gen. is just around the corner . Hey so is the new Vista O/S !
What me worry . :01:
Hey sports fans it gets better you can not enable auto updates after this authentic check , dirty buggers  Believe me I tryed, turn on auto updates before you d/l the newest updates and you should still be able to get the critical updates . :)

Re: Micro$oft at it again
This seems rather too simple to work...but it seems to bypass the check
In Internet Explorer
Tools > Manage Add-ons
Disable "Windows Genuine Advantage" thingy
Close Internet Explorer, then go back to the update site

Saying this key was not issued by Microsoft . If you have a better trick or crack please share . :) My PM 'S are MT at the moment ! :)
Or your one of the few that has windows auto update enabled ? I'm curiuos by nature as have installed on a few computers . :)

Both entries open the same windows application. I deleted my shortcut in the start menu>all programs area for "Microsoft Update" and kept the one for Windows. I replaced the outdated icon for Windows Update with the new MS one though. :D
However, so far my updating and using Windows Validation with the updating service through my current PID and key, Izzy reports all systems, "go fly".

Re: Micro$oft at it again
No 2 entries here. Just read about this while at work. Pirates will still get critical/security updates. So no biggie.

Re: Micro$oft at it again
Its issues like these that make it real nice to know someone who works at a LARGE company with volume license copies. :D

ALTERNATE WAY: Getting around the verification for windows update
If you read slashdot then ya probably know but everyone else:
Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address
bar and press enter:
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')
It turns off the trigger for the key check.
-
Re: Getting around the verification for windows update
It works, but you have to redo it every time you visit Microsoft update.
The method that I posted is permanent.
