The fact that one chooses to use certain words does not mean that one lacks a "civilized vocabulary" nor does it mean that one is unintelligent.
As j2 says it's more a case of having a wider range of words to choose from. Allowing for a greater range of nuance and connotation.

Let us also say that, for reasons of my own, I desire a word of a syllabic economy not afforded by such as "copulation".
