I meant to say that too, obviously.

Thanks so much guys
Raven's here. It's lovely.
3 words. Pics, pics pics.
OK so I am up and running on my new baby. I don't know what I did but my transfer speeds are better than ever. I'll usually transfer files from one disk to another at around 80MB/s or so but I'm up over 110 now. I did get some new cables ( SATAIII )do you guys think that would affect it? I got them because they were round and would look better sleeved but it looks like they're working out well :)
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/2551/speedw.jpg
Well this pic only shows 100 but it stays around 110 mostly.
EDIT: I stayed upate tonight to wait for newegg's "shell shocker deal" as was was on a SSD here is the ad
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/6522/captureha.jpg
And so I bought 2 as an Xmas present from the missus. Thanks hun ;) I know she will torture me and not let me have them until Xmas. But hey they're on he way :)
Gonna RAID 'em?
I may get a pair of the 30GB to do just that.
Storage I've got out the ying-yang, speed is what I'm after.
Oh yeah I'm gonna raid em. Clcok what are your transfer speeds at? Going hdd to hdd(large file transfer) Any idea what is normal?
Well, let's see...
OK, just transferred a 2.2 GB .avi file from one drive to another.
Transfer rate started out at @125 mb/s and then settled down to @ 105mb/s, so basically, just about the same as you.
I'll go out on a limb and say that's "normal".
not normal for me at all. I am plagued by slow speeds in the 60-80 mb/s range for as long as i can remember. i don't recall doing anything differently. :idunno:
Fine then.
We can call 60-80 mb/s "normal" and 100mb/s "Blazing fast, OMG!", if you'd like.
It does have a certain ring to it, don't you think?
Shirley! Now i'm looking at mounts for the SSD's I'm growing kind of partial to one of these.
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/233...tical01264.jpg
or this variation
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/767...s012741012.jpg
I do have this one already from an old idea

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/305...r023229359.jpg
I don't like the way they look like that but maybe I can modify it
Not sure which one yet though. What would you do with em Clock? think I could make one??
ALSO I can't believe I forgot to post this. I was thinking about taking on a Modded G5 project as you well know and I decided to check craigslist for shits and giggles and low and behold a guy was selling a g5 with a blown Mobo for $40 so I had to grab it. Looking now I kind of want a "pro" model with 2 DVD drives but I don'treally need it and for $40 fuck it. I am trying to get the damn components out but I'm a little lost due to Apple sucking ass like. I'll post pics later like ;) I'm even checking local powder coating prices :O
Jeez, $40?
You got a smokin deal, the seller is an idiot.
Know what I'm gonna do with my SSDs?
Couple of velcro tabs and stick em on the back of my mobo tray.
No muss, no fuss, no hardware.
Oh by the way, I missed your earlier question about the "Russian sub clock".
It's called a Nixie tube clock.
Yeah in fact he even left the DVD, HDD, power supply and they all work fine. I know little about Macs but it's the Dual 1.8Ghz model. Still a huge pain to get the components out of the fucker. Good thing I'm "handy" and have a torx set here and different allen sizes. apparently these arent meant to come out. I may just beat it out of there in pieces like.
Wait till you disassemble the case itself to mod it for a real motherboard tray.
About 2 million of those little Torx fuckers.
Very curious how you plan on dealing with the integrated board standoffs and mounting the tray to the (fixed) sidepanel.
Very curious, indeed.
Well I think I am going to use plexi glass as it's easier to cut and from what i can tell I can attach it to the existing standoffs with some screws and attach smaller standoffs to the plexi. Think it'll work?
I'm still just talking through my ass as I haven't even see what I'm up against yet. I was too tired tonight to go look at it so.....
Not just any plexi either. The AC ryan red 3mm one here
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/8...r011059303.jpg
I just used some deltaco bracket things for mounting 2.5" drives I got when I bought the drives, and put the drives where the regular hds go in an aegis. (Mounting them the way they were supposed to be mounted didn't work with ssds, but flipping the brackets around worked well.) May post pics later of that, if I can find my phone cable. The raven will have to wait though, it's back in my apartment in the city, over 20 miles away.
I kind of like clocker's idea, though, people say ssds are supposed to develop some heat, like ram, but I've never really seen it (granted, there are two 92mm fans blowing straight at my hd bay), so strapping them to a flat surface with velcro sounds ideal to me. Maybe the side of my 5.25" bays. They'll take up less room, whilst looking pretty.
EDit: Balls, I just picked up the new graphics card, an evga gt 240 intended for dedicated physx. It came with a green pcb, not a black one like in the picture :fist:
At least the fan controller they sent me was black, I'd have been even more annoyed if I'd gotten the blue one, again.
Nope.
The Apple standoffs are fairly tall (not to mention, swaged into the sidepanel), so if you use them as a foundation, then put a piece of plexi on that, then put standoffs on THAT...your motherboard is now sitting way towards the middle of the case instead of nestled over to one side.
If you use a piece of plexi to mount the motherboard, what about the backplane?
Deltaco!?
http://www.driveintheatre.com/evilsam/ff/deltaco.jpg
I'm confused.
As far as the GFX card goes you could order the GTX 275 backplate and mod it fairly easily as I did to fit. I have the 260 so it mostly fit other than some screw holes lining up. There's a saying" Pics or it never happened" ;)
Well Clock how tall would you say the original mac standoffs are. If i drill holes so that they sit "inside" or through the plexi so that the "top" of the apple standoff is the base of the Mobo then mount the new standoffs from the backside of the plexi like. I'll make a simple pic like.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/2/simplej.jpg
so I am "hiding" some space screwing from both sides of the plexi. I guess the worst case I could always cut the original standoffs and epoxy a new one in there.
It's never been clear to me exactly how those guys were doing it.
I do know that the original standoffs can be removed without cutting...get a small, deepwell socket that will just slide over the standoff and put a long extension in it.
The wobble/bend the socket and the standoff will pop out.
Supposedly.
I'd try it on one that's not in the way of anything, just in case.
You still haven't said what you think you'll do about the backplane area.
On a side note...
I'm holding two OCZ Vertex 30GB SSDs in my grubbly little hand.
Got 'em from Microcenter where they were only $10 more apiece than Newegg ($109/per, after rebate).
I figured $20 was worth not having to wait till (probably) after Christmas to get them.
Shall return in a few hours- Jeebus willing- with some preliminary thoughts...
I'll make sure to post some pics once I've got the damned cable.
Don't think I'll need a backplate or anything anyhow, it won't be visible through the window, it'll be sitting too far to the back of the case. And I'm generally not that bothered with colour-matching my stuff, just wanted the black pcb for symmetry, I guess.
As for Deltaco, the firm bearing that name in Scandinavia is a whole different animal. They import and rebrand some computer stuff, and for some of it they just act as a reseller. I expect that which they elect to do for a specific part depends on what brand it was to begin with. IE: my 2.5"-mounts were probably noname stuff (which doesn't matter much when it's just bits of steel).
Hey bud what do you mean by backplane? If you mean the IO area I think I'm going to use something easy like this. Modified a bit OC
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/8...0010646912.jpg
I am looking at places that do water jet cutting in my area and i plan on doing a side window i haven't seen before. it's going to be pretty cool :) I hope. Another idea with a setup like this i could mount the MObo tray using the backpiece and installing some "slider" top and bottom rails like in the Tj-07 case. Hey the Mobo could even be removable. HEY I think that'll work This is the piece I mean
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/6564/img2065vb.jpg
Right, that's what I figured.
So, if you have to buy the whole tray, why seperate the board mount off it?
Why not just use the whole thing?
That's what I meant. This way the Mobo will be removable just like the Tj-07 mounted to the back of the case with screws and the "sliders on top and bottom. This would eliminate having to do anything with the current standoffs :)
You'll still want to break them off, I think.
Yeah I started to already. I'm leaving some on for now just in case. I'm going to start a new thread on it as well. with some prelim pics :)
So that "bend 'em and snap 'em off" technique actually works?
Good to know.
It;s more of a very simply twisting motion, but yeah it's VERY easy to remove em. the only thing is it leaves a slight pot hole there I have yet to deal with. I'm thinking bond-o
Ready? annnnnnnnnd go.
SON OF A BITCH BASTARD MOTHER FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT COCK SUCKING ROTTEN ASSHOLE FUCK!!! Whew, well you may have already guesses that I have a leak....again....from the same shitty res....... on the same shitty side as last time. I have no idea what happened other to say that it spontaniously sprung a leak. I was walking by the computer and noticed that my res level was waay too low. I couldn't find a leak at all All I saw was a tiny puddle at the bottom of the case with no clue as to where it was coming from. I refilled the res and it was leaking from the same damn XSPC res on the same side no less. Not exactly the same place this time though. it was more in the middle. As I went to move it a drop must have hit my sunbeam controller the wrong way and POP! one of my controllers is out now as well. So I shut her off and removed my SSD's toots sweet and here I am back on the HTPC. This all happened as I was floating on the proverbial cloud as I just got some great news that I am starting work tomorrow on a new job. So I have to get up at 5AM and it's now 9pm so I can't fix it tonight damnit, not that I could anyway as I'm not going to use any more XSPC products. I am going to write to PPCS and see if the will give me some kid of store credit or something. I'll update later.
FUCK!!!!
Anyone know of a good dual bay res?? Shit now I'm going to have to reroute my tubes and pumb placement again. Probably have to order more tubing as well damnit.
I hear this air cooling thing is really taking off...
Thanks dude, I really needed a laugh. Seriously though this is fucked up like. It's been a month now and all was well. I just kept thinking Oh god not my ssd's $400 down the tubes, ATM they are sitting on the bottom of the case on their sides until the brackets arrive. this just sucks donkey ass.
Unless water got to the connector area I don't think the SSDs would care if they got wet.
Not really something I feel like testing though.
I've never been a fan of bay reservoirs and have only used the Swiftech Micro rez lately.
It's small, it's simple, it's watertight.
That last feature might interest you, D.
heh. I've been off forums since new year's eve. This is the first thread I've clicked on, anywhere, since then, and that post was the first thing that caught my eye.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!½.
Also, if it were me, and I tried my hand at water cooling, and had that snazzy corsair case of yours, I'd go for an external reservoir. Doesn't it even come predrilled for mounting a res outside? I know it has holes for the tubing, anyhow.
Wouldn't that kind of prevent it from leaking on something important inside of the case?
On another note, I moved all my stuff out of the aegis and into that raven I mentioned, did it last night/this morning, in one continuous session.
I dunno how the fuck it happened, but I think it took over eight hours.
Also, since misery loves company and all: My favourite bit was finding out that "oh shit, I've wedged the the cables for the i/o-shield el, and the lcd poster underneath the mobo", right as I'd gotten nearly everything mounted. Had pick everything apart again, only to find Id removed the lcd poster entirely and put it away, and the other cable needn't have been sorted :dabs:
Everything is looking good now, though, though I might redo some of the cabling, mostly out of ocd since it's hidden anyhow.
Anyways, to get back on track: I wouldn't worry too much about the ssds getting wet, like clocker says. I'm half sure they can even survive a brief soak, assuming you let them dry out properly before testing them again.
Shame about the controller though.
Was the computer running while it was puddling up?
And congratulations on getting a new job.
Snee pics, pics, pics on the new case. If no camera then draw some.
The 800D does have mounting holes for an external Rad but I suppose it wouldn't be that hard to rig something up for a res. I did send PPC's an email about the situation and their initial reply was to ask what fluid I am using. Good thing I am using distilled thiis time so that rules out a corrosive fluid problem. I was 1 sec away from replying "battery acid!" when he asked. Hopefully they can do something to help here.
The new job an am VERY grateful for but I am working outside in 30 degree weather all day and alas I am exhausted and even though I have to do something with the leaker in my hallway and 2 unopened newegg boxes sit next to it with parts for the g5 project I can't do anything tonight. I'm going to shoot for tomorrow and I will have some pics up then.
Also Snee what is СннЫ?
Typically Snee, you'd see the radiator mounted externally...not the rez.
There's no particular reason that the reservoir is more likely to leak than any other part.
Except in D.'s case...then, whatever parts leaking will cause the worst damage is the one that will fail.
I heard he once burned a car to the ground while washing it.
Actually I was Detale-ing it. ..Get it! HA! I'll be here all week, try the veal.
And tip your waitress.
I dunno mang, I've seen a couple of really neat builds with huge reservoirs outside of the case.
I'm no expert though, so maybe that's just stupid. Just thought it looked really cool.
And, Detale: I'll try and take some pics, just need to get hold of a cable for either of my phones so I can get them uploaded.
One's at work, I think, and the other is somewhere else :dabs:
СннЫ was something I just put there when I was bored - I ran 'SnnY' (my old name on here) through babelfish or something and it spat out that. I'd have written it 'СннИ', but what I know of the cyrillic alphabet is getting pretty rusty.
It's -23c here, btw. I'd rather have your weather.
Orite, you said 'Typically'.
Hard of thinking today.
I was about to reply 'No, I'm serious, and look at this: http://forums.vr-zone.com/hardware-a...reservoir.html'
Then I realised you weren't telling me it wasn't something anyone should do.
EDit:
Oh, this was a new one.
My fully legal Windows 7 just told me I might be using an illegitimate copy after a reboot.
It's still activated and everything, so nothing's broken. But the funny thing was that I was just looking at a site with a loader for win 7 before rebooting.
Yeah I'm still waiting to see if PPCs will help me by taking one of these crappy res's back or what. I have some new fans to install etc. Just too tired as of now. Maybe next weekend like.
