I hate to rain on your crazy parade, but Rise is a prequel to the Planet Of The Apes series, so luckily you don't need to wait, the other five movies were made in the late 60's early 70's. Roddy McDowall with full ape prosthetics still looked like Roddy McDowall (go figure).
N.B. The new The Thing movie is a prequel to the original John Carpenter The Thing movie as well.....

As Art pointed out, there's the entire 60's & 70's series, and a more modern sequel that came out in 2001.

Being that it's kind of an iconic series, you would have to be either very young or very foreign.

Hey I just saw this great OK shite I smashed my TV and now need to buy another one movie called Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and the ending seemed to set up for a sequel. I sure hope somewhere down the road they continue the story and tell what happened to the baby.
Also kill Jar Jar Binks.

Like anyone would watch that.
Well, maybe 5 movies of slow torture of Jar Jar, but no more than that.

Went to watch it with the Mrs. and I completely agree.
The script was part of a sub-textual musical that we both thought was brilliantly executed without being too in-your-face or forcing the movie to slow down too much.

Just because you don't go in there with a child, doesn't mean you have leave without one as well.

I tend to agree with this assessment on the wikipedia page:

I'm certain there are more detailed discussions of the topic, but the links included in the quote are very interesting in terms of what used to be "acceptable" in past American cinema and television. :ermm:

Though annoyed by the stereotype elements that manifest in Jar Jar Binks, his species/community was not one that really mirrored the black community. I think it was just a poor assumption to think that including it would be met with any kind of appreciation. The example I found even more atrocious was the ghettospeak autobot they used in the second Transformers movie (or were there 2 of them?).
Now, Deadwood, which is at the top of my list of all time favorite shows, had a black woman (Lucretia Aunt Lou Marchbanks, based on actual person) that seemed to have had most of her lines written by Tyler Perry (single-handedly the worst thing about the show, but that falls on a very short list for me). I don't know if it's a valid approach to her character if you base it off the notion that most of our "uppity nigger" stereotypes were formed post Emancipation, but it simply doesn't resonate with the accounts of her history.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Killer Elite- The Statham, The Owen and The DeNiro.
Killer Elite makes the same mistake as The Expendibles...it assumes that simply putting all the testosterone ever in one film automatically makes for awesome.
It really doesn't.
Nobody plays The Statham like Jason does and he's perfectly serviceable here.
A very believable action hero guy, he is.
Also, he has the world's most consistently perfect beard stubble (in my experience, the first few days growing a beard are quite odd...itchy and noticeable...so I've been bemused by the trend in stubble as a "look"); the film spans several weeks but he's never clean shaven, yet never grows a beard...just a perfect few millimeters of stubble. His kissing scenes with the "girlfriend icon" must have played havoc with her skin (why do I think of these things?).
The Owen is saddled with two insurmountable disadvantages in Killer Elite.
His character is part of a shadowy group of ex-SAS agents called The Feathermen.
Ooohhh, scary.
Then he was apparently styled by the same person who did Tom Hanks in the daVinci movies...i.e., very oddly.
If they were shooting for John Cleese, they nailed it.
I think The DeNiro was cast
...actually, I have no idea why.
One thing I did appreciate was the cars.
Everyone drives really crappy cars and there are several chase scenes, I found them kind of amusing.

The community element is a great point. I had not looked past the character himself. According to Lucas, Jar Jar was put in "for the kids"- as was the entire series. Intentional, or not, it teeters so close to poor taste- especially since the actor who played the character was black, and so many blacks were made to play the buffoon for so long in blatantly racist shows.
I'm not one who seeks out such material to call it "racist", or not, but Jar Jar did strike a nerve in me. I don't remember the Transformers GhetoBot, but I may have just dismissed it as a lame character and moved on. There really wasn't much memorable about Transformers*- I seem to remember explosions, car advertisements, an irritating "star", robots, and an out-of-place piece of eye candy in the form of a female- dark haired in the first, blonde in the second. However, the "ghettospeaking" characters are becoming far too numerous, and may find themselves in their own shame lists for this time period. Modern cinema/television is still guilty of racial stereotyping characters- it's interesting what can be considered acceptable when using a CGI character and a black actor doing voices...:pinch:
*Apologies for revealing the entire plot to those who may not have seen either film.
As for Deadwood, that is one show that has so far passed me by. The name has popped up occasionally, and I think I may have to add it to my list of series to watch based on your high recommendation.

Actually, there was something else that stuck out for me.
It was movie night, so naturally we ran into people we know. One specific acquaintance wanted to watch Harold and Kumar and insisted on us watching it with us, so we decided to watch both movies, with Puss in Boots as the follow-up. The H&K theater was packed. I literally had to scout the seats for a good 5 minutes before I found some place for us all to sit.
After it was done we went for PiB, and the theater was empty. It was just us, and another three people who looked like they were about to have a threesome after the show was done. Made me run a sanity check after myself once I was done. It was such a wry attendance that I literally had to bring up the fact that Eric Schmidt was listed as a producer to regain some semblance of sanity in conversation with the would-be-threesome. I've been to off-the-top of my head, Cloudy with a chance of meatballs, Monsters, The Princess and The Frog and that water animation movie last year, but none that had an attendance this low. That's what shocked me.

Upgrade it to my highest recommendation. I'll even stop asking Idoleyes to watch Louie to use as credits towards recommending this show to you. There is one caveat, show kind of stop being produced at conclusion of third season, there were some issues with actor contracts and they were going to wrap it up with a movie once they realized they couldn't do season 4. It's mostly based on the history of the Black Hill territory (Dakota), and they tend to slightly fiddle with some details to make the story work. Includes some notable historical US figures, Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock, George Hearst, the Pinkertons, even Wyatt Earp showed up in an episode.
That's not even the good part, the writing/dialogue for the show tends to be heavily Shakespearean, with a tendency to play with phrases, but includes within it copious amounts of "foul" language. You even see other elements of Shakespearean style including soliloquies, a slow dissent into madness, talking to a "skull". The show is just brilliant.

First the easy one out of the way: Princess and the Frog. A heck yes, but I have romanticized everything African American from the 50's/60's personally, from the music, to the clothing, to the cultural presence. To me, for reasons that would go beyond the 20,000 character limit of VB, it is the one era in American history that didn't suck, and it's the one environment other cultures should push towards. From the first number of the musical at an abandoned restaurant, my heart melted and I knew the movie owned me. I'm the last person you should ask about this specific movie, for the aforementioned reasons, but if you like the blues, want to see a talking alligator in a swamp that screams for a hunter with a straw cliche, definitely go for it. But that's not where the movie's brilliance shines for me. The storyline breaks boundaries that I am absolutely crazy about. If you want to see the breaking of mundane cliche of princes going for commoners in illogical ways (Cinderella et al.) among many others, juxtaposed with biblical narrative roman-era themed city invasions, this is the movie to watch.
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs: Now there's nothing wrong with the movie. It's the oft fantasized world of a geek to invent something to dramatically alter the shape of the world then go on an epic journey to fix the chaos. With bubble gum. But it rains steaks. Not really a bad thing in my books. Anywho, I think where this movie went wrong with me is its adherence to other movies and shows in the exact same space. There is nothing this movie offered that you couldn't get out of a 7 minute episode of a season 0 Jimmy Neutron episode. It didn't deliver originality beyond the premise, and aside from the food being displayed as art in imaginative ways, that's where I drew the line between "Things I paid to see" and "Things I could have seen elsewhere."

A movie that inspires that train of thought is one that's best left to encounter by chance.

Anyway Timothy Olyphant is the World's greatest living actor and everything else said in the last two pages that wasn't by either clocker or Funkin' is wank.
And yes I know i didn't include myself in that list.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
No problem brah. :)
Btw I watched The Mechanic remake yesterday and after viewing that empty excuse to connect a few ludicrous action scenes together three things sprung to mind
1. Jason Statham has indeed become a brand.I could summarize most of his movies by simply writing "He looked angry,at some point took off his shirt and against all odds in the end exacts his revenge".
2.A twist ending is only effective if you don't see it coming from several miles away
and 3. I never thought I would ever be saying that I miss the artistry of Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent.
-
Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
I think JS is more than a brand, he's an avatar.
If you're the producer/director/writer, once Statham is cast 50% of your job is done.
You don't need a backstory or any explanation (beyond the cursory "ex-military" ninja) of your character's behaviour...the audience already knows the Statham character.
For instance, they already know from the Transporter franchise that he can drive, so you need do nothing more than plop him in a car and go!
We know he can fight because he does in every single movie, and he's very good at it.
A bit off topic...
Jason and Clive have two big fight scenes in Killer Elite- they're both cleverly choreographed (especially the second one where JS is restrained to a chair the whole time) and suitably brutal.
But very long, I thought.
Seems to me that a professional killer would immediately default to FATAL mode, every blow meant to incapacitate and kill but these two duke it out for (apparently) hours.
In my movie, a duel between pro killers would last maybe 15 seconds...because they're THAT good.
This also frees up runtime that I'll need to introduce the unicorns in act 3.
I've never really considered Statham an actor- he always seems to just be himself with a slightly different suit of clothes (although even his wardrobes are eerily similar...I wonder if it's his real, everyday stuff?)- so yeah, "brand" or "avatar" is a better description.

I kind of already assumed you watched it, but that you've just refused to comment on how much you loved it. Anyways, it was time to kill the running gag.
Edit: Hipster macky liked Statham before he became an icon/brand/avatar, but hipster macky doesn't like him anymore. Hipster macky already made a similar statement 6 days ago.

When you started making the Shakespeare references, I will admit, I was a bit unsure if I wanted to commit to watching it. However, as promised, I watched eps 1 & 2. No more hesitation. I'm grabbing all of Season 1 today, and plan to be a (more) negligent father (are lunches required by law, or just merely "suggested"?).
@Idol: So far, I think Ian McShane has the strongest character. Although, I do like Timothy Olyphant in everything I've seen him in.
I'll eventually get to Princess and the Frog, but Rings has never been right about anything he's posted on this site, so I'm certain his movie suggestion will be a complete and utter fail. :naughty:

There is absolutely no doubt that Ian McShane steals the show throughout the entire series, Swearengen is a character you love to follow. His historical counterpart was actually more ruthless and less likeable than they portrayed here, but I'd argue that was a great direction for the show, since every other criminally oriented "pillar" is pretty much a vile dick.
I think Olyphant does a much better job in Justified, his character in Deadwood seems to be too static. Interesting note, after Seth Bullock's multiple positions in the Black Hills area, he goes off to join Roosevelt's Rough Riders, and eventually becomes a U.S. Marshal. Natural progression for Olyphant don't you think?
I've been doing some active comparisons between Deadwood and Shakespeare with a particular goal in mind. It would make a great part of a college course to tie Shakespearean style entertainment to modern theatrics. Deadwood would seem to be the strongest anchor. This course idea is more for my wife to implement sometime in the future, wherever we end up and if we still happen to be together. I think of it as a way to generate more interest and appreciation in Shakespeare. However, the chemist in me is suffering at the notion of developing literary courses since I haven't quite figured out how to make chemistry more interesting to the younger generation.

As for amateur porn, I honestly don't know. As all porn to me looks amateurish and I'm not experienced enough in watching it to tell what's what. There's just something about slutty girls getting pounded by big hairy guys that's a huge turn off to me.
I have seen, I don't what you would call it, masturbation porn? Girls alone with themselves. Now that was pretty hot. But for the most part I just stay away from it because nine times out of a ten I'm not going to dig it. I would rather just go to the movies or the beach and stare like a creep at all the little girls. Now that's a good time to me.
@Darth Rings, like Idol mentioned was it a school night that you went? I usually always go on the weekends and no matter what the movie it is the theater is usually packed. It seems even more so with these animated movies.
And if you haven't seen Up yet then give that a download immediately. That and Despicable Me are pretty hilarious.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
I watched both seasons (series/chapters?) of a BBC series called Whitechapel.
Being an effete snob, I am genetically predisposed to British procedurals, sadly, Whitechapel ain't no Prime Suspect (then again, what is?).
The first two series (which are each 3 episodes long) are built on famous Whitechapel murderers...season one is Jack the Ripper, season two, the Krays.
I have no idea where they go with future seasons; seems like a self-limiting concept actually.
The plotting is harebrained and the "procedure" aspect is absurd.
What's oddly compelling is the actors- I swear one of them is a clone of Elijah Woods and another is a Gary Busey relative of some sort.
I think they're the main reason I watched all six hours.
Faced- as I was- with the option of Whitechapel or NCIS...I'd call it a tossup.

Odd they chose the Kray brothers as the second season when they could have used the Jack the Stripper (the Thames nude murders) instead. But then I suppose for authenticity's sake, Jack the Stripper operated in the Westend around Hammersmith rather than the Eastend, but he was a freaky, freaky dude in his own right, and far more creepy than the Krays or their rivals the Richardsons. The Kray's were a criminal gang like many others, and compared to others weren't particularly murderous. They were however the first 'celebrity' gangsters and that reputation has lasted long after their deaths.
I would have chosen Jack the Stripper though because like the original ripper the murders are unsolved and the murders were of between 6 and 8 prostitutes (two victims are possibles, not confirmed). He just killed them in a different way, but I will leave you to research his methodology on that one......

On the other hand I would consider watching The River Why to be a good substitute for Sominex.

I did do some entry-level reading on Swearengen (Is that not a perfect name for such a character???), and he was a true bastard. One of his many highlights included placing women who took far-from-home jobs as "waitresses" into PERMANENT prostitution positions. :O But, Al, I doooon't like thiiiis job. :P

Alright. I just saw EB give his "blood on the floor" soliloquy, and he knocked it out of the park. The "brother of Daryl and Daryl" has some serious talent when allowed to display it. Foly Huck!

I have decided to go at the same pace as my wife (we watch 1, or 2*, each night), and not burn through them without her. 36 hours of television- no matter how great, is hard enough to fit in with the kids once- never mind twice. :)
Loving each episode, character, setting, and dialog. Amazing.
