Now, can you guess which character will experience a slow descent into madness? The real E.B. Farnum (Ethan Bennet, as opposed to Eustace Bailey of the show) was actually a much more respected and competent pillar in Deadwood's history. The contrast with his character on the show is an example of the creative freedom they took, and I think it played out brilliantly for the entire series.
In general, I've seen this show bring out some of the best performances for all the actors involved (spare a few roles which didn't get much involvement). You're going to come across something a bit confusing later. The actor who plays Jack McCall (Garret Dillahunt) also plays another role later in the series. Needless to say, he does a fucking wonderful job for each role.
Last note: Glad that you're not the only one enjoying it in your household. I had a hard time keeping my wife on schedule with this, twice she was left to catch up on episodes while I was gone. Seriously you will not fall asleep with this movie, worth watching :)
Another movie I just recently watched is:
Gerry 2002
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0302674/
I would have to say it's on a class of it's own, so it makes it hard to explain the movie itself. Throughout the movie the feeling of vastness was really held together well. The sounds used throughout the movie really worked well too, although I thought it was a bit creepy. I wouldn't recommend this for everyone.

Pelican Blood (2010)

The Art of Flight (2011)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1646967/
I managed to get my hands on a 1080p copy of this Documentary/Adventure/Sport type of film. Boy was I impressed! You have to watch it in full high definition to appreciate the camera work/optics used. After watching The Art of Flight it left me with an overwhelming sense of adventure and made me realize how great our planet is with it's vast and untouched areas which before watching this you'd think no one in their sane mind would travel there....
Well done Red Bull Media House.

Bellflower (2011)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1242599/
Another great film to watch. The story line is quite weird actually but when you watch the whole movie it all comes together in a weird kind of way. This film is unique in it's own style and for a low budget movie Evan Glodell pulled it off quite well I must say.
Enjoy, :)

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Moneyball- Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill.
Baseball bores me*.
Playing baseball bored me, watching it is excruciating.
Baseball is so boring that many fans become as enamored of the official statistics as with the game itself...baseball fans were the first sports nerds.
Oddly enough, for a game which had such a detailed and extensive database, player evaluation and game strategy still depended on a large entrenched bureaucracy of scouts and coaches, who basically operated on intuition.
Everyone knew statistics could tell you how a game or a season had gone but no one realized statistics could also explain why outcomes occurred and predict future play.
Baseball also has a huge money problem.
Major market teams- NY Yankees, for instance- have a lot more money to spend on talent than smaller teams and have bought their way to dynastic status.
Like all physical talent, baseball players have a very limited career window and must ruthlessly follow (and be unilaterally manipulated) by money.
If a smaller market team stumbled upon a budding star, it was inevitable that an elite team would make an unmatchable offer and lure him away.
Talent flowed ever upwards and the big guys always won.
End exposition (all of which is given the viewer in the first five minutes, so no real spoilers up there).
Moneyball tells the story of Billy Beane (Pitt), general manager of the poorly funded Oakland A's and Peter Brand (Hill), a prescient statistical analyst.
To Beane, baseball is all about money, there is no romance or glory left.
Brand is a lone voice in the wilderness who has processed the data and can't understand why no one else see what he does.
Forced together by happenstance, once paired, Beane and Brand revolutionized a hidebound game.
So, it's weird I've written so much about something that bores me.
Shows how much I enjoyed the movie.
Moneyball is exactly the kind of movie Brad Pitt was built for, he suffers in the presence of artifice and spectacle (Troy anyone?).
Jonah Hill is not annoying.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman is almost unrecognizable.
Even if, like me, baseball isn't your cup of tea, Moneyball is fun.
*One of my brothers played pro ball, so I've seen the personal side of the game a bit more than most.
The movie tracks very closely with my impressions from him...only the fans and coaches believe in the magic.
Players and management believe in money.
-
Did he punch anyone in the face?

For some reason baseball makes for good movies.I can only guess that with so little happening on the field it leaves a lot of time to do interesting things off of it.

I like thoughtful,I like gentle ,I like deliberately paced and I don't demand action .Call me crazy though but watching someone, especially someone that I feel no amity towards, stare off into space for prolonged periods of time doesn't strike me as being very entertaining.
Also the whole thing felt uncomfortably like one of those thinly disguised Christian "message" films.
Glad you liked it though .I would ,given my druthers, prefer to like more movies and dislike fewer.

I've already read both versions. :) I believe people wanted to tell his story as having ended with him penniless, and failing to board a freight car. However, being bludgeoned, and found in the street is a fair ending, as well.

Give All the Boys Love Mandy Lane a shot. It's no Deadwood, but it is a watchable modern slasher/object of affection film. Not too bad for what it was- a breakout role for her (she's Mandy- go figure, right?), and a decent genre-based look at the "value" placed on beauty in our day and age...

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Moneyball is still in theatres around here.
Twilight: Breaking Hymen, part 1.
Well, fellow Twihards, this is it, the beginning of the end.
To mark the momentous occasion I DLed the first/crappiest cam I found- hoping for lots of popcorn crunching (and not disappointed!) and bathroom seeking screen blockers (again, not disappointed!).
Then I got decisively stoned and fast forwarded my way through the movie.
I really admire the producer's decision to cast actual dead people in the lead roles.
Greatly adds to the overall reality of the franchise as the cast lumbers through the story, galvanized no doubt by hidden wires hooked to car batteries.
Oh, I said "story", which sorta implies a plot.
There isn't one really, I think all the action got saved for Part 2.
Spoiler:
Show
Bella's eyes CHANGE COLOR, OMG!
I think it's because of vodka tampons but I may have fast forwarded my way past that scene...
I really enjoyed the ten minutes I spent watching Twilight: Boinking Bella.
Gonna start stocking up on Thorazine so I'm ready for Part 2.
Overall, I'd rate this installment of the franchise a solid 4.6 Newtonmeter.

Oh no, Twilight is all about Just Say NO!...to pretty much everything.
Fer crissake, the male lead is a hundred year old vampire who "abstains" from human blood (and is wracked with guilt for his lapses), "abstains" from fucking his (presumptively) hot girlfriend and "abstains" from turning Bella into a vamp until after the wedding.
If Edward didn't sparkle and wasn't obviously gay, he'd be the poster boy for the Christian right.

You can already buy (really!) knockoffs of Bella's wedding dress for @$700...but it doesn't come with popcorn.

I've not read or seen any of these Twilight things, I just know of their existence (enough to get the reference when they're being satired). I also know the chick that plays a role in them has the deadest expression of any living person I've ever seen. She should really be doing stand up comedy or perhaps a quirky supporting role in a sitcom. She makes Steven Wright seem too excitable.
Anyways, that's my excuse for not knowing the whole point.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
50/50- Joseph Gordon Levitt, Seth Rogan and Anna Kendrick.
Adam, a 20-something dipster* is diagnosed with very serious spinal cancer.
50/50 shows how he and his friends/family react.
So, a comedy about cancer with Seth Rogan as the manic pixie sidekick**, gee, what could go wrong?
Amazingly, almost nothing.
Rogan- who basically plays himself in every movie- reins it in and gives the performance of his career.
Anna Kendrick is fucking adorable and Angelica Huston plays the troubled mother with gooey steel (go ahead, figure that allusion out).
JGL is his usual polished/nuanced self.
Bonus for a cameo by Max Headroom.
50/50 is a small movie that left a larger impression than I expected.
*I made that up.
**This one too.
-
Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
50/50 was surprisingly good.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Went last night to see the latest Twilight. Good thing I didn't actually pay for the tickets(just the popcorn) or I would have felt completely ripped off. Actually I kind of do anyways. I could have sat at home and popped a bag of microwave popcorn and watched the entire 49'ers game, instead of making it home just in time for the fourth quarter.

If it wasn't for Seth Rogan I wouldn't mind seeing it. I'm not really a fan of him. But then again the reviews I've read have been mostly positive so maybe I could tolerate him to see an ok movie.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Hugo: Wow. This has made it to my top movie in a recent time very quickly. I don't remember enjoying a movie this way since Benjamin Button. The entire movie was a gigantic moving painting, the sub-textual references to the medium, the speeches given back and forth between proxies, the simplistic but cute attempts at finding meaning within absolute chaos, and an entire testimonial about the state and ideals of movies in a self-reflective manner all rolled into one. I loved this movie like no other in recent times. And that's something since it'd usually be out of my sweet spot.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
The Eagle (2011) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1034389/
I actually have a well worn copy of the original short novel someplace. Not that this film has more than a nodding acquaintance to it which is only ironic in the sense that the novel ,The Eagle of the Ninth ,written as it was for younger readers is still considerably more mature than this adaptation.
The movie starts out well ,setting the proper tone of bravery and honour but soon after the event that sets the real story in motion, missteps badly and during the next hour or so basically nothing of interest happens.
When the climax finally arrives the whole movie lacking true substance, while not entirely toppling over like a house of cards still teeters more than is comfortable.
Part of the problem is that of the main "villains" , their atrocities are not shown, only spoken of as historical events and besides the truly ill-conceived decision to present them as some sort of ancient Celt/Apache hybrid there really isn't enough reason to root against them.
A hero is only as great as the evil he fights against.First rule of something or other.
Other than that I should mention that somewhere between Fighting and Dear John Channing Tatum removed himself from the Justin Timberlake category of actors whose mere presence ruins any movie for me .Although lacking the necessary "steel" to make him totally believable in the role , he stirs enough empathy to make you hope he comes out of everything OK in the end.
In short , the movie peaks about 15 minutes in and the final battle when if finally occurs comes off as more merely tying up loose ends than rousing climax. Between those two events sadly just a lot of epic pointless padding happens.
Oh and during the final scene I think someone forgot which movie they where making and inadvertently stuck in the ending to a buddy cop movie.

I'm angry at you for the Princess and the Frog by the way. It reminded me why I hate non-Pixar Disney films in general. Faux sentiments, one-dimensional characterization that makes it a feat that those idiots have managed to remain alive in the created universe of their story. Something else I forgot to respond to:

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
The Ides of March- George Clooney, Ryan Gosling.
Ryan Gosling changed clothes after Drive but walked the same character into The Ides of March.
Seriously, the "extended closeup of a grim face- no dialogue" seems to be his only schtick lately.
Clooney plays a Democratic Governor vying for the White House.
He is a white Obama, gifted at rousing populist anger and promising change.
Naturally, he has feet of clay.
Gosling is second in command of the campaign and has to clean up the muddy footprints.
This is another Clooney vanity project (he also produced it) and it's just not as interesting as Good Night and Good Luck.
Everybody thinks politicians are sleazy empty shells these days, the machinations/inside deals of Ides aren't a surprise or particularly shocking- and no where near as luridly bizarre as the current Cain/Gingritch candidacies- so I'm left wondering what the point is.
Ides is basically a well produced visual edition of the Huffington Post.
Note to scriptwriters everywhere:
Simply panning in to Ryan Gosling's face and having him stare mute at the camera is NOT A PLOT, nor is it CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.
In normal life you'd think someone who silently deadpanned like that was either a psychopath or retarded...possibly both.
If you can't find words for Gosling to say, hire Aaron Sorkin but I'll be damned if I'm going to do your work for you.
"Is that look supposed to be steely resolve or did he eat Taco Bell for lunch? Aaarrgh! I don't know! Ryan, you're SO enigmatic!"
Enigmatic my sweet ass.
Gosling has perfected the art of getting roles where he doesn't have to learn any lines.

There was no discernable plot, but that was probably because the dialogue was not dubbed; only the "ooh's" and "aah's" were dubbed. And, as most fans of adult cinema know, plot is not one of driving forces behind the genre. To that matter, neither is dialogue.
Anyway, my friend Rich masturbated to Panther's scene while listening to Weird Al's "Polka Party" album as I and four other people looked on. He wiped up with a dirty sock I found under the couch.
I give this movie a 10.

................
Gettin' Square (2003) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0341376/
A surprisingly enjoyable and gentle Aussie spin on the sort of crime comedies that Guy Richie use to churn out. Stars a young and considerably less buff Sam Worthington as an ex-con caught between trying to toe the straight and narrow and his past refusing to make that an easy thing to do.
I found it leagues better than the modest 6.6 on IMDB .Even though it's predictable there are some great characters ,more than a few laughs and the ending is sure to satisfy all but the most jaded of viewers.
Certainly worth a look even if it's unlikely you'll be adding it to your greatest films ever list.
Private Resort(1985) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089839/
If you think the landscape of the film world hasn't changed much in the last 25 years look no further than this very early entry in Johnny Depp's career.
Before the internet films like this were produced to titillate teenagers .Well as bad as it is ,and Private Resort certainly is bad , at least "sex comedy" back then wasn't afraid of the "R' rating delivered on that promise.
Match it up with Tom Hank's Bachelor Party and see how all great things have humble beginnings.

I went to see Spiderman 3 in a movie theater in China once, we were in Xi'an and had about 4 hours to kill before our train left. My thought was that since it was only just released in the U.S. at the time, it'll most likely be subtitled. In one of the very few instances that I was ever wrong, the movie was in fact dubbed. So there we sat, watching the entire Spiderman 3 in Chinese. It actually didn't bother me, I feel like if it was in English I probably would have walked out of the theater before it finished.
