A person should strive to be more than the sum of the title on their paycheck. No one is probably ever going to be rich studying history but that doesn't mean that history isn't important. In short, people have differing values and to some materital wealth isn't that important. Also a good education doesn't brainwash you, rather it unshackles your mind to the possibility of individual thought. The "brainwashing" if any comes from your peers and the media.
As for why some areas tend to vote they way they do, I would suggest that it's from peer pressure and societal conditioning. ie my family has always been Liverpool fans, therefore I'm a Liverpool fan.

Well Idol my good friend, it is now just after 3am, i am heading to my garage to clean my clubs and golf shoes, have a few wobbly pops and get ready for pickup at 5am;)
And after i will be pool side relaxing, and maybe end up in the hot tub:)
Not sure if you think golf and having a pool/hot tub is a material thing or not buddy, or better yet spending thousands on a bicycle that you ride casually :)
