The important kind of morality is relative, and having a working brain means you're born with a sense of empathy that you must continue to develop as you age. On the other hand, I've experienced regret too many times for being nice to someone initially just to find out that they're worthless. It's like getting robbed. I should feel good about being nice, but it just doesn't click for me until the person has shown they're worth it.
