Xbox Soft-Mod Tutorial

I have a halo edition xbox V1.4 dash 5960(?) I have action replay and a 512 jump drive as a memory card. I've read tons of forums on the entire soft modding process and I think I get it... I'm just not entirely sure how to downgrade the dash, plus I need the 4920 dash ^_^ my overall goal is to get linux running on my box. If anyone could send me links or info or tips or not call me a noob it'd be much appriciated! Thanks!

Im just double checking, theres ABSOLUTELY no way to ftp a game save??? My computer doesnt have the requirements for an action replay... And i dont want to have to upgrade. I had to scrap the usb drives to get the better video card.

i soft modded my xbox.. but it doesnt let me download updates, and there is a MANDATORY update for halo... can someone tell me how to get the soft mods off of my xbox?
