I usually keep everything i download except some tv shows and none dvd rips of movies i have a 650gb and 350gb in my pc and a 2tb and 500gb external drive.
1x 30GB ocz ssd (os drive)
1x 1TB samsung spinpoint f3
1x 1TB toshibba external hardrive
Till now around 7TB --> 6TB on 4x1.5TB & 1TB on 2x500GB drives

I built myself an unraid server with 17 drives at the moment with about 20tb. I used to burn all my stuff on dvd, have around 2000-3000, but since i got my server, i haven't burnt a dvd in years

The fact of the matter is that mechanical storage space is getting cheaper approximately every 6 months. I purchased a 2 TB Western Digital Green for $110 after taxes and I have to say, I am more than satisfied.
As of right now I have;
Internal:
1 x 80 GB
1 x 1 TB
1 x 2 TB
External:
1 x 1.5 TB
1 x 250 GB
Total: 4.83 TB
2 + 1 TB
160 + 250 GB
Both are internal hard disk

I mostly all the stuff. I have a 1 TB hard drive plus a 320GB portable hard drive. Some times I burn the stuff to a DVD if it gets too old.
I make backups of a lot of stuff, so there isn't much that I completely delete permanently, unless I just have no use for it. But most of my storage isn't really for stuff like downloaded movies, music, and tv shows. And for shows off of TV, I often capture it in HD myself and try to delete them when I'm done watching.
For total hard drive space, both used and unused, it would be at least somewhere around 4.5tb, but I don't necessarily have it all hooked up at any one time, and that's also not counting around 2-3 hard drive crashes I've had where the drives are still filled with files and possible to retrieve/recover data off of, but aren't workable for everyday usage or access. Also, about 2-3tb of it was due to black friday last year, when there were extremely cheap sales on 1tb drives and I bought 1 for myself and 2 for friends, but eventually ended up keeping all 3.

I don't use a lot of space, even a 160GB hdd would have been enough for me.
