Is anime the same as japanimantion? If so, why was another term concocted?

yes its the same, I think anime is a shortened version of the japanese pronunciation of animation. ie its what japanese people call japanimation and the term has caught on with english speaking peeps

btw on topic: my favourites are fooly cooly & trigun. Planetes is up there as well.
