The Sony dru-810 is a benq 1640 clone...its a pretty good drive nothing to fear there. You can also cross flash to a 1640 then receive all the support from the qsuite tools http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....hlight=dru-810Quote:

Would that there was similar support for my DRU-510...
just got the nec 3550 for xmas and its keeping me smiling. burned a few dvds and cds with nero 7 and its performing well.
i spose i should look around for a firmware update. i saw someone mention it on the first page.
Fortunately the 510 was a true sony and received there great support LOLQuote:

On the other hand my NEC drive has worked flawlessly for about 18 months now, maybe longer. Only 2 or 3 coasters in that time, and those were because of bad media.
A weighty recommendation.Quote:

The funny part is the software cd that came with it (no drivers) takes right off as if nothing is wrong.
I just got the NEC 3550a for christmas.
I've only burnt 1 dvd so far but it went fine.
It has all the features and is really cheap, altho it's a bit on the loud side when it gets to reading DVDs or CDs. ;)
EDIT: My drive came with Nero 6.0, I just downloaded 7.0 so I dont have any opinion on the bundled.
BenQ DW1640
cd/dvd-rom drives and burners don't use brand/model-specific drivers. they're pretty much designed to work with the generic drivers that are already built into the operating systems. "where are the drivers for my cd/dvd" is one of the few PC-related things you should never need to worry about.Quote:
