My apologize to all who posted there help as regards my problem. In future i'll post how the problem was solved rather than a thank you.
This was how i solved the problem.
Download this file: drive.reg - it's the default "drive" key for a plain Windows XP SP2 install (with WinRAR installed, dunno if it'll matter). Import that. Check if the problem's fixed - you may have to reboot.
If not... go to regedit (start/run regedit, ok). Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Type "dr" to get down to "Drive". Delete it. Run that reg file again. Now it really should be fixed... there's no way it couldn't be. ]
