imo its more a matter of preference as thers so many decent ones. i use xine for video and xmms for music though.

I quite like having a few set-up, for different types of file... e.g. VLC is great for DVDs and longer stuff, Totem's quick and easy for short playlists, and MPlayer is my backup for when nothing else is working... Then again I quite fancy doing a clean install...

Also worth keeping an eye on for audio is Songbird. I have started using the dev build as my main music player on my laptop. Runs fine for the most part, haven't come across any major bugs yet, although it does need improvement with regards to features/functionality, but I remain confident of that coming with time.
