Originally based on the ByteMonsoon source, TBSource has easily become the most commonly used core for many of the private sites around today.
The original TB domain was resistered on 9th June 2003, I can't get the details for the original registration of bytemonsoon, presumably they dropped it at one point. The current registration say 5th October 2004, but archive.org has pages from June 2003 for them.
Wikipedia also lists TBSource as being based on bytemonsoon

Take a look at the "Criticism" section to see what us coders have to work with :P

Re: what was the first privet torrent tracker ?
ByteMonsoon was the first functional tracker that integrated membership into the code, and TorrentBits added forums and stuff.
Prior to that, we had such places as Hawkies World, which was a forum with a tracker attached. In those days, we didn't have a browse page. You had to embed the torrent file as a link into a forum post.
As for one of the first, I believe it was Digital Update.
