Re: DVD/Divx Player with USB
Thanks for the RF crack.
Vista eh...Vista is GREAT!
Seriously though. I do love the player alot but I put a bunch of Xvids on an old 40 gig external I slapped together and the Drive itself gets pretty hot after about 2 hours of watching movies. Does anyone know if this is due to the Constand reading of info off the disk? I will get an enclosure that has a fan in it soon, but for now do you guys think it's the old ass drive or that it has something to do with it being used straight for 2 hours?

WOW I just checked another thread that came to mind and this player was recommended by
Busyman™ in
this thread ( just wanted to give credit where it's due ) I honestly didn't remember that it was recommended, it was just an impulse buy, but Thanks Busyman!
It's on sale right now for $59.49 USD and I also got the PNY 2 gig flash drive for $20 WHAT A GOOD DEAL!!! This player is fantastic it looks great the USB feature is just amazing! With the 2 gig I fit 2 Divx movies on it just to check it out and I transfered it to the stick in under 2 min and it was ready to play immediately. I am so impressed with the ease of the UBS features I had to write and tell you guys.
I am going to try the External USB HDD in a while but I have no time ATM Someone said that the drive needs to formatted to FAT 32 and currently my WD 500 gig My Book is NTFS.I do have an old 40 gig HD with an external enclosure I could hook up quickly but I have 2 questions. First Why would I have to format to FAT 32? Secondly I can't seem to figure out how to format to Fat32 I have XP and it doesn't give me the option other than NTFS to format to. Do I need a program to do this or what? Sure I could Google it but FST is always better than Google! Thanks guys and I HIGHLY recommend this player to anyone who is in the market for one!
One thing you wanna do is name your movies something short and recognizable. FAT32 doesn't allow long filenames.
You and me seem to be in the same boat. I have 2 500 gig externals, 1 250 gig, and 1 400 gig....almost all full of movies.
I use the USB keys mostly for episodic content. For instance, since I don't have the Sci-Fi Channel in HD (yet), I don't record Stargate Atlantis on my DVR.
I recently downloaded every episode up to 10 since they were HD feeds, renamed them SA 1, SA 2, SA 3, etc. to differentiate the episodes (FAT32), plopped them on a 4 gig USB key, and watched them back to back commercial free. After SA 1 was done, it automatically went to SA 2.
For movies, I periodically bring the hard drive upstairs to load more movies on the 250 gig. However there's such a shitload to watch that unless the movies are "must see" at that moment, I watch from what's already on the FAT32 hard drive.
What I want is hard drive downstairs that I can either hook up to ethernet or access wirelessly.
I just haven't got around to it yet but it is out there.
Re: DVD/Divx Player with USB
yeah, the hard-drive shared on lan look good.
You mean something like this right?
Here's an enclosure with lan capability.

Re: DVD/Divx Player with USB
i was starting to go down the exact same path as all of you...
i was going to upgrade to the same model dvd player (my philips dvp642 has been my love for years) and use my external 300gb hdd to sling media to the dvd player. my friend bought it first and the poor interface/navigation + fat32 short-filename issue made me look for alternatives.
i decided to buy an xbox for $100 off ebay instead and mod it, then install xbox media center. BEST. DECISION. EVER. hook the xbox up to the lan, share your tv/movies folder(s), set it up one time, and stream away. completely cut out the need for a dvd player period. it even scans your tv shows and movies and tags them with all the relevant info from the net.
granted, if you want HD then forget it. i'm not rich enuf to even approach HD seriously yet. but this was a much better option to play my xvid downloads than the dvd player + external usb hdd for my situation.
just something to consider if HD isn't a concern and you wanna cut out all the in-between b.s.
Re: DVD/Divx Player with USB
HD is also out of my reach for now.

Well I use the USB stick for movies to watch immediately and I update the HDD every few days for more of a library thing. I don't have the time to watch all the movies I DL so this way when I have time they're ready without having to burn them.
Also Does anyone have an idea about the HDD getting extremely hot? Do you guys think it has to do with it being read from constantly or is it just an old shitty HD?

you said your enclosure doesn't have a fan so i'd say this is normal for a hdd that is being used consistently. if the enclosure is also all plastic it doesn't help. you should really invest in a decent enclosure. this is the model i have; love it. the aluminum case + the built-in fan keeps it from roasting. this model is newer than mine and has the firewire capability as well.
Re: DVD/Divx Player with USB
The enclosure I have is metal don't know if its aluminum but it's this one here. I will get the new enclosure soon I just wanted to see what you guys thought.

Good point. I have a modded Xbox already (with XMBC) so I should probably do that. It has a 250 GB hd in it.
I bought the DVD player because it upconverts my DVDs to near HD quality. The USB was an added bonus actually.
I might hook up the Xbox again (and play all the damn games in it) cuz it will solve the problem of moving my hard drive.
What I really need is an input selector.
I now have
360 - component
PS3 - HDMI
Wii - component
Xbox (modded) - component
HD-DVD player - HDMI
DVD player (upconvert) - HDMI
I don't have enough inputs for the HDMI.
