Laugh if you will but Michael Mann's style has always been orchestra rather than acoustic.
It isn't very personal but when it works (like in a couple of my favorite movies Last of the Mohicans and The Jericho Mile),it can be very emotional (and entertaining) none the less.

I think the most visceral gunfight in recent movies is in Children of Men when the army moves into the Bexhill refugee camp.
The street battles in Blood Diamond were effective as well.
Mann's work is too stylized for me.

I have no clue what i would use both those actors for in one movie.
hmm,
Maybe as side role, as waiters or something.
or use the jcvd method, self reflective (but not together or why not) documentary style.
They are so overcharged with references it is difficult to use them.
