Exposure is really the only thing that will get you past the basics. College Spanish kicked my ass and I live 4 hours from the border. I ended up taking an accelerated learning class one summer in Monterrey, Mexico for 6 weeks and I learned as much in that time as in almost two years of class time.

I'm not sure about travel expenses in Europe or exchange rates between England and Spain, but try to spend some of your vacation time in Spain. It'll help tremendously! :)
