I take it that currently to aleviate myself of all the headache in setting up the bios etc, it is best to search for a premade that is upgradeable without the OS + added software which will significantly reduce the overall cost of the unit. All the advice given was appreciated - i will also give dell a call - i doubt they will sell without the OS + added software thou.

i got my laptop in january, it cost about £695 its a compaq evo n1015v amd ahtlon xp-m 1500, 128mb ram 20gig hdd, and i put an extra 256mb in, so overall it cost about £750.
but they have alot better ones now.

i think that you should buy one HP or a Toshiba coz they're cheaper than others. And you should add some components that you want, but try to keep some money for the add-ons.
