I know a few people who own air rifles with which they shoot squirrels, rabbits and birds for fun. I hate it but at least they eat most of what they kill, except the squirrels.

That's what slings or whatever they are call are for, guns are intended to kill something or someone.

I'm not much of a historian, but I don't think there was much clay pigeon shooting going on thousands of years ago, when slings were invented. People were probably to busy using them to kill stuff.

Slings went out of fashion when after a spate of fatal incidents the Crown made you get a sling licence in order to wield a sling. This led directly to the development of the bow and arrow, which was intended for shooting down apples.

Well in those times, you didn't have anyone in the Bronx NY, Dorchester Boston or Columbine going in a killing spree with their slings, so it was never the same.
Guns were made to kill people and they should be illegal, no exceptions.
