The k-lite codec pack has nothing to do with windows movie maker. It should be able to make movies effeciently without you having the k-lite codec pack or any other codec pack, but it cant make movies at all because it crashes all the time.

I had the same problem some time ago and it was the damn DIVX aniti-freeze.
uninstall it and try again ;)

do this to stop the anifreeze
Start > run > regsvr32 /u divxaf.ax
and it should not freeze again
