It's probably not the best way but I open the files in an editor like vegas video and then just export using the codecs I want to re encode it. As for burning I always burn at the fastest possible speed and never have any sync probs, ie 6 avi files onto a 4.7gb DVD in 13mins.

Ripping to harddrive : http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Rippers/SetupD...ter_3.1.7.0.exe
Converting to avi/divx/whateva you want :
http://keihanna.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcef...060_preview.exe
Flask Mpeg Subtitles Fix : http://www.digital-digest.net/downloads/fi...titlefix_v6.exe
The program above fixes the problem where you when flasking a movie it skips some subtitles.

Answering the topic what u are using (Tmpgenc) is the best I use it all the time with no probs.

sometimes TmpgEnc handles the sound more accurately if you use Virtualdub to save the AVI's sound as a WAV and use that as the audio input, instead of trying to encode directly from the AVI's MP3 stream.
