The lower class which constituted a majority of the population was never even exposed to Englishmen, nor the schooling system (girls didn't start going to school in Egypt until the late 50's/early 60's). The current schooling system is so corrupt, that the government is trying to pass laws forbiding the teaching of foreign languages.
