VLc last version and gom player are the best player's for movies
Splash Pro EX for MKV, mts, anything that is 720p+ and for Bluray movies ArcSoft Total Media Theatre .
For music, I'm using foobar2000.
For movies, I'm using Media Player Classic.
The above is what I suggest to you as well, they worked out for me and I have no need to look elsewhere. I think it's not really about one player being different than the other, it's about what you need, your personal preference.
I am using aimp and for me it is the best.
Splash pro ex and vlc player should work just fine for you!
I would suggest you to go with VLC player.Its freeware + plays almost all kind of formats + simple user interface.
I suggest:
Foobar for music
windows media player classic for movies.
Really i think VLC for movies and winamp for music. They are more great app but i use those
foobar2k wins in my book, very customizable and advanced. Perfect for music hobbyist.
Use one solution for everything. VLC media player with all codec packs.
