isnt ebony some kind of treated wood, that comes up a sort of rich brown colour, like conkers?

Dark brown ranging to near black, depending on the conditions.

They used to make the black keys on pianoes in ebony, I think.

I think there's at least a hint of brown in it before it's treated tho'. But then again, maybe not in the heartwood of that one tree. Which is what they make piano keys and such out of.
