I susgest you try a copy of LinuxLive, this way your Windows partion is not messed about with because i think you just expect linux to work with all your current games and applications, this is un-true, none of your programs will work you will have to find new ones for linux. Also some of your work/school files won't work on linux without extra programs so don't go formatting your hard drive and installing linux only to find you've lost all your work data.

Yup, peerzy is right, if you were planning to swap, rather than dual-boot, then you ought to try a live distro first.
I like knoppix.
But again, there are mandrake, ubuntu and suse live-cds too, and many many others, best chance of getting one of those, bar downloading it or buying one, is to look for a mag with a live cd.

Those Ubunto discs come wityh a full and live version on two different disc.
