I thought they didn't eat pork because pigs sleep and root in shit. They're filthy animals. No-one wants to eat an animal that hasn't got enough sense to disregard its own feces.

I assume most of the bans/prohibitations in religion has had practical reasons behind it.

I can imagine the above explanation was a justification for the ban from "common people".

As for me, coincidently I don't eat pig flesh. Nothing to do with their habits, simply because I don't like the taste. :D

It does seem plausible though, religion could be a handy tool for controlling the population.
