Sometimes compromise is the best idea - And I think that's how meth meant PG to be used as in the first place.
Hey I'm new to the peerguarian thing today, I just downloaded PG and its blank, Ive downloaded the "Recommended" file from here: http://www.simplyclick.org/uploadertest/pgupdates.asp
And replaced the blank guarding.p2p file with the downloaded one.
Am I "safe" now, or do I have to update immediatly, or on a daily bases, and how?

If you want to download via P2P safely, then you'll have to have PG on when you download. When you don't use any program like Kazaa to download (e.g. before you switch Kazaa on or after you've shut it down), there's no need to have it on - Only when you're running Kazaa or similar.
Likewise, if you're a now-and-then downloader (i.e. you shut it off when you don't need it, and you only download when you need to), then I'd recommend updating it every time you d/l using Kazaa. If you leave any P2P program on practically all the time (like I do :D), then you've really got to choose how often you think yourself - I update at least once each day or when I remember to, whichever is more often.
There should be a guide to using PeerGuardian in the Filesharing forum - If not, I'll cover it :)

There are alot of useless IPs in there, I wouldnt know which ones to delete and which ones to keep, if some knows, tell us.

I still say that the US Customs Department, the US Department of Justices, the Government of Ontario, the French Department of Defense, the French Military Police, the European Union, the Belgium Federal Government, and on and on aren't snooping around P2P networks. ;) I'm certain they have better things to do. When there's a "lite" version of this list, I'll take it, but this is ridiculous.

One would almost think that the poster of this list was in the employ of the very people that PG wishes to prevent from accessing our hdds.
It's a sort of reverse logic, make the list large enough and the bar stewards won't even share with each other.
Again, the current text version is at http://methlab.tech.nu/ and is under 70 million and being updated often.

Actually the most current, I believe, is the PLAIN TEXT VERSION, copy, delete the old and the paste the new into the Guardian.P2P file. Open it with Notepad and then click save. Restart PeerGuardian and your set.

no i know lol but i was jokingly referring to the french dod and some of those- i mean they may seem goofy to have in there but who is that hurting- as for the duplicates i just checked the pg database and there are two long posts pointing out the dups... so that should help out once the list is modified
Well, if I wanted to access a large number of government/school websites, I wouldn't be able to. ;) I've seen posts on the PG database saying IPRange(corrected - don't use IPRange), and duplicates, and ranges far too wide. It would be possible for me to go through, spend a number of days sorting it, but it's far too much work for something so minimal. Plus, it's their database, they should look after it. ;)

MagicNakor, i hear you on the frustration of browsing the web with pg ips but there are ppl that are posting comments at the pg site and they are editing the ranges- also the corrected ip posts (please remove otheretc) have been taken care of (mostly) in the recommended database list- the notes in some of those were eg corrected-please remove other and either meth or eremini removed the errors. and as i said before someone just posted the duplicates that exist so that will be taken care of. it's far from where it should be but it's dependent upon ppl contributing (that would be the "they"- me and other ppl who want to see the effort work) meth started pg for friends of his and he has never claimed it to be the end all be all of protection (in fact he has said that theoretically peerbuddy is designed better) also i've posted suggestions that the ppl submitting the ranges should be limited to those ppl that meth know but for now he's stickin with the thumbs up, down method where ppl can vote on them. so if anyone has suggestions or comments meant to help the effort post at the comments section.Quote:

That database is not owned by them, it is not patented, it is not copyrighted, and it is maintained as much or moreso by users of Peer Guardian than the developers. The developers are in fact so busy on the raw programming and other projects that tasking them with maintaining the database meant to protect US is too much to ask. Also, many of us believe there is something perverse or wrong about exclusive, virtually-permanent ownership of ideas and the 'thought-crimes' that others comit by having similar ideas.
It's true that many of the blocked ranges are often for trivial/stupid things, but at least there is a short text with each one telling what they're for so people who care to go to the time and effort can be more picky about what they block.
This is an ongoing and very imperfect process. It lacks the organization or skill-backings of professional software. Currently, the number of actual CONTRIBUTORS is very small. But the need is great and time may be short. We're more likely to be fools for not trying than for failing.
If the number of contributors is so small, they must be comprised of conspiracy theorists, because I still haven't seen a legimate reason to block a good percentage of what's on that list. In effect, it is their database. It certainly isn't mine. I don't maintain it. If I did, it'd likely be in better shape.

Maybe a very tiny number of them are conspiracy theorists I guess -- but mainly they just have no clue what they're doing. Those 'bad' ranges were in an old internet list of "FBI monitored websites" and just got grandfathered into Peer Guardian. Many of the users think a longer list is 'better' without even considering what's blocked -- so too do many who submit ip ranges.Quote:

But the project is relatively new.
You don't get support on the internet easily OR quickly -- especially if what you're trying to accomplish is technically complicated.
It's hard enough trying to explain WHAT it (supposedly) does and what limitations it has. And 90+% of people who use it and run into a website that is blocked are helpless too.
Is it any wonder something obscure and technically difficult can't get much help? :P
Want to be 100% safe.. unplug your internet at nightime when you dont use it sometimes. Zone Alarm also has an Auto-Lock feature that'll lock your connection after a certain amount of innactivity time. Then wakes it back up when u request.
I am glad I have just updated peer guardian 14 hits from the fbi and now 6 from audible magic (copyright breaching org).... wonder what they've already got on me? :unsure:
What is telecom italia I have had 11 hits from them in the last 20 mins.

The Italian ISP was blocked for having an extremely high ratio of spammers/hackers/viruses propigated from it. It's up to you whether it's worth the risk. After all, if they CAN connect to you what are they likely to offer in return that you might be interested in?Quote:

as for the fbi doublecheck the ip with a whois-fbi.com range were goin around at some point (it's fbi.gov duh) - not sure if they've been taken down or if ppl still have them from older lists

"The PeerBuddy method of blocking is technically superior to PeerGuardian's (it properly blocks the connections as opposed to monitoring the TCP table and closing connections but won't work on win9x/winnt4.0 or older)," said PG. "Others are also interested in collaboration to monitor, trap IPs and block p2p enemies."
In the meanwhile, "PeerGuardian was only really intended for friends and people who knew me: it was just a project based on my reaction to the RIAAs persistant attacks on peer-2-peer," he said.
"When the RIAA screwed AudioGalaxy up, probably the most cooperative p2p network there ever was, I decided I had to at least try to do something in return and, well.. you know the rest.
"At present PeerGuardian seems secure enough for broadband users (judging on feedback lately), the old version (v1.2) wasn't really secure though, it would occasionally let a connection through with enough time to send some data. (for instance, webpages would partially load but images and other page content wouldn't!) - With PeerGuardian v1.96 this problem disappeared.
"Older releases of PeerGuardian also used to get overflow errors, crashing the client and disabling the blocking, this also appears to have been eradicated with the latest release.
"Recent fixes were spurred on by unexpected coverage on SecurityFocus, TheRegister & Wired.com. I'd left 'PG' buggy up to this point, after getting more attention I had to try and get some of the problems resolved. I haven't finished with the project though, there's still more work to do on it.

either they're trolls or they can't read- another reason to limit the ppl who can have access to the site (the whois link they have on the site- you can click on the ip number in the range and the whois pops up- the second entry shows it's the fbi
