I did contact them. They never mentioned any extra week...let me check the control panel.

heh, I contacted them at least 10 different times and methods. maybe that factors in?
They gave me 10 days credit after about contacting them many, many times and only after I did so VIA email complaining about it and asked them how they could justify charging me for a full month when I can barley use it at all, etc, etc...
For now I am with another provider albeit more expensive so being the cheap dude that I am I wait for the problem to be sorted so I can go back, maybe
From usenetserver.com homepage:

We have identified the cause of the network instability that some users have been experiencing lately. We have ordered replacement hardware which should be here on Nov 8. In the mean time, we have rerouted part of our internal network to get around the issue temporarily. However, some customers may still see a few errors during peak times. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Thank You,
Engineering
Looks like everything is back to normal for now. I get full speed once again and SSL works. Lets see for how long ......
Same here, everything is running great.
Been having the dreaded 400 issues this week and taking ages to connect especially using SSL,but when i don't use SSL it connects almost straight away for some strange reason.
Everything was fine yesterday but ...
... here we go again it doesn't connect at all ssl ,nntp 1 to 10 , nothing works.
Ok i am out of usenetserver.
Good luck everyone

I gave it one more shot but i lost my hopes with them........
Was just reading this thread and I was wondering is SSL really that important? I'm with newshosting and don't get it, so if it's actually really important I might have to change...
I finally got pissed off enough to cancel my account, plus it would have renewed tomorrow. Things were 'alright', not great but just alright for a day. Then I was back to downloading at a crawl and tons of connection errors. I was getting about 200-600KB\s on a 1200KB\s line
I switched to Giganews, speeds are excellent as expected, 1258KB\s and very steady.
They are just so darn pricey.... ugh.
No, it's not unless your ISP is doing traffic shaping.
If you use the forum search there is dozens of threads discussing SSL.
There is an option to "stop auto renew".
That is how to cancel it.
I did that, and just to be sure I wrote customer service telling them not to bill me again.
About an hour later I got this email....
Dear Mr.(My Name),
Your account has been set to expire on 11/12/2007. If this is incorrect or you have not made this request; please contact our support department by replying to this email or by sending an email to [email protected] Otherwise you do not need to take any further action.
Thank You,
Usenetserver Support
shame to usenetserver,i used them 1 month this summer and everything was normal, but it seems they mutated.yes giganews is the best resolution but pricey too.i hope they plan to lower the prices for Christmas
I too have switched from UNS to Ngroups. UNS have always been top notch, but suddenly the speeds was horrible. After a chat with a consultant he told me that they had too many customers and things would not (!) improve.
I'm switching from UNS to NewsDemon. The speed is shit and I'm tired of getting the 400 connection errors.
Do not make the same mistake I did. I switched to Thundernews and after a day had the same errors I was getting with usenetserver. Support lied to me 3 times saying there is no problem it was on my end. So I ran a traceroute to thundernews and lo and behold I was being routed through usenetserver, lol after I confronted them with that they gave me a full refund. Then I looked around a bit and settled on Newshosting and that works fine and has since I signed up with them. Anyways Newsdemon is routing through Usenetserver.com as well. I dont know if they are resellers or what but have a look:

Your right, wow. Looks like it's Giganews then. That's probably why they are having so many connection issues. They have resellers + clients from UNS....That's alot.
Try NGroups.Net or AccessUsenet as I have no problems with NGroups currently.
I have had no issues since they've claimed repair on the problems. I just can't bring myself to swtich. $13 and some change a month for SSL and 10 connections that max out my 20 MB line? I'll deal with minor issues. Giganews is a great provider, I wont argue that, but they're too expensive in my opinion.
That is intersting as I am using NGroups right now and am not having any issues on port 563 with SSL.
:blushing:sorry my mistake ,it was the firewall
