It actually takes 45-90 or so minutes to install XP/Vista (depending how fast your computer is), while it only takes 15-25 minutes to install the latest release of Ubuntu or Fedora... The only problem with Linux drivers is when it comes to very old hardware and also ATI and NVIDIA graphic cards, but that has been fixed and improved just recently when both companies release stable Linux drivers for their cards... Linux also has great alternatives to Windows softwares, such as OpenOffice (FREE), GIMP image editor (FREE), Pidgin AIM/MSN/Yahoo/etc. all-in-one chat client (FREE), and other applications (FREE)... You can also install and run your favorite Windows softwares (Photoshop, uTorrent, etc.) and games in Linux using Wine.
But it's all matter of choice of course, and everyone should stick with their OS that they're most comfortable with. :)
what linux torrent client do you use ? :naughty:

Well...
MS Office 2007 = $499.95
OpenOffice = FREE
Photoshop costs $649
Gimp = FREE
Obviously big difference, that's why I put them in caps. :P Good luck with your WiFi in Linux... You could always ask for help and check out guides on http://ubuntuforums.org or other Linux distro forums.

Specious comparison. Everyone here steals any software they want, including OS. So cost is not a factor.
Guides are irrelevant if there aren't the drivers, Shirley.

Linux Mint
 Linux distro for the total newbies. Based on Ubuntu, it only takes a couple of clicks and minutes to install and everything comes "out-of-the-box."

Yeah I have Linux mint installed but can't seem to get my wireless internet to work...:(
Any ideas?

Re: Don't Give Up On Vista
That's the problem, getting drivers for your wireless thingy.
What type is it.

Don't know for sure. It was built into my laptop

nLite install of XP Pro with drivers and service packs slipstreamed takes just under 12 minutes on my less than spectacular PC.
Your assertion is null.

Re: Don't Give Up On Vista
More to the point; who gives a feck how long it takes to install? Shirley it's not something you do every day.

I see...
Well, my comment was directly to those majority who install/reinstall Windows the regular way.

Well, at least you can't install any of the free stuff he's bragging about, like.
You have to settle for the curiously over-priced stuff he's listing, so there :snooty:

How crap does a computer have to be to take 45 minutes to install XP?

Straight-up - those applications that I was "bragging" about are more like alternative apps for Linux than free apps for Windows. Linux programmers can't put price tags on their softwares, because Linux is all about distributing softwares for FREE and all about community... I actually use Pidgin on my Windows XP PC, because of its versatility... On my Linux PC and laptop, I actually use OpenOffice, Pidgin, and Photoshop (through Wine), because I love it better than Gimp.
As I said, it's all matter of choice. Use whatever floats your boat.

Re: Don't Give Up On Vista
I bought a new HP that came with Vista Ultimate installed about 4 months ago. I've never seen an OS that hangs so often, and for no discoverable reason. Microsoft should not expect the public to be unwitting beta testers of their released final products.

Re: Don't Give Up On Vista
Don't give up on Vista it will work mostly fine in 9-12 months. :)

Stop typing FREE in upper case when you're talking pish.
You know it makes sence.

I'm sure there are tons of good retorts, and I know there are good reasons for using linux as well. He's just not found any yet. Maybe 'cos he's a bit of a beginner, like.

Can you use bold text in Linux without recompiling the kernel and building text drivers?

That's too bad... I'd suggest that you try it again... Try the latest release of Ubuntu or Linux Mint or Fedora with their LiveCD and see if they'd be able to detect all of your hardwares... Yes, it does need a lil bit of effort sometimes to fully run Linux, but it's all worth it.
But if your PC runs perfectly on Windows XP/Vista, then you should obviously stick with it. :P

what model card is that ?
Linux actually supports far more hardware than windows. The problem is the latest and greatest hardware is rarely released with Linux drivers so it takes a while for the community to produce them, test them and fix the bugs.
hopefully all this is starting to change since Dell, HP and other manufacturers are shipping Linux pre installed with machines. If your hardware does not have reliable Linux drivers these days you are going to miss out on millions of potential sales.
