Windows Media Player 11 is best in all. i am using 11 because its my favorite media player...
Foobar is what you are looking for , in addition with last.fm plugin it's great . I'm using a modded version of foobar from eti and i'm loving it , it even have different color schemes to match with your windows theme
I'll come back to edit this.
i use a combination of MPCHC and VLC also by default both players just use internal codecs im not so sure if you can even make VLC read external codecs ?
all i can suggest is winamp..just think its the best there is
Wmp
foobar, I'm using it for years now and it's all i need
My Philosophy is simple. Why add all the junk when all one want to do is watch a video or listen to music. The old KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) rule applies here. In my mind there exists only two worthy multimedia apps for Windows. Winamp and VLC Media Player. The only other player I use is Media Player Classic - Home Theatre. With exception of the latter, which is newer, I have not had any reason to use anything else for several years. Real player, quicktime have n place in my place. They both have been substituted with Real and QT Alternative.
For Linux and MACS generally the native players are more than efficient. That opinion is purely based on the suggestion of others seeing I do not use either, well not yet but the MAC is looking more attractive every day.
to media sure u should use
KMP ;)
i just switched to potplayer and love it.. it was recommended to me by lifehacker.com Very good site. it's there new fav video player

:D I know I'm responding almost two years later, but I'd like to throw a suggestion in, if I may. :)
Instead of changing your media player, have you considered an alternative approach? I installed Shark007, mostly to force windows to recognise MKV files and give me the media data on them like it does with avi files, etc. I see no reason Shark007 wouldn't work for music, either. That way, you aren't forced to move away from a program you clearly enjoy using.
Hope this helps. :)
have gone back and forth between vlc and MPC. on vlc now as MPC started causing audio to stutter.
Use gom player whit full update's .
