VLC windows and ubuntu
kmplayer , gomplayer
For single files or videos: VLC, for a complete solution: XBMC
The big codec pack with windows media player classic home cinema included should work, i found it skipped a lot with 1080p but That was with a shitty graphics card.
I love the way VLC can play ISO but I hate the way it can't pause by clicking the screen like mpc can, foobar was good with the Oink skin, I miss Oink :(
I just use VLC because it can load anything without issues. I'm very picky about the design of it though.
If VLC had pause by left clicking anywhere on the window it would be the better than WMP-HC
classic meida player is best ............bcoz i am using........approximately last5 years..........
MPC-HC latest nightly builds with madvr (with good graphics card) or evr (old card) + lav filters
VLC and MPC-HC on Windows.
What's windows?

If a single file, I use media classic player. But if they are container video (dvd or bluray disc) I will use power dvd.
Foobar2000
PowerDVD was my favourite player a long time ago.
jetAudio (I like its minimalist design in that it sits as a bar along the bottom of my screen)
VLC player
Windows media player.

Been using JRiver Media Center recently. Have to say, I really like it. Not only is it great for music (Playing, ripping, etc) It's also a damn good media server. Plays anything I throw at it. One of the best media programs I've used.
VLC but Daum Pot Player is very good
for music foobar. its the best beats the rest.
and for video vlc, of course
I use XBMC best media player imo music movies tvshows etc...
Plex for media and VLC for free hockey streams
I would def say VLC Player.
I use xbmc. I have mysql running on my NAS, and I run one main media centre PC in the living room, plus 2 raspberry pi's in other rooms. On the pi's I run raspbmc, which has come a long way since it was first released.
The selection of addons is also very good, ice films is excellent as is Navi-x
Plex for media centre and VLC for randoms (i.e., one offs you're not gonna keep and/or different codecs/formats)
Agree with bigdave50. XMBC looks awsome on a 55" LED in the living room! VLC is perfect for the speed and compatibility, never had to use any codecs & runs perfectly
