Ah, we call that a chimney stack.
An alcove is like a recess in the wall.

Re: How long do you plan on living?
Chimney alcove
-
Re: How long do you plan on living?
@Jp.......Yes I know that ffs :frusty: but 99% of the time when someone says "Alcove" they are talking about the resess next to or either side of the chimney. Hence me calling it a chimney alcove.
And what I said still stands.
Unless it fell down.
Jonno
-
Re: How long do you plan on living?
131 people out of six billion also call it a chimney alcove.

Like I said, where I come from it's different.
The alcove was usually in a corner and was used as a sort of "dislay case".
I've never heard the phrase chimney alcove.
No big deal, we also called the kitchen "the scullery" where I grew up, ken.
-
Re: How long do you plan on living?
@Both of you...... You're hard work, an alcove can be a cupboard space or any kind of depress in a wall.
But when most people say Alcove they are talking about.......oh ffs I typed it above, I never said I call it a chimney alcove, I said that actually for clarity knowing manker is an office boy and would'nt understand :P

I've never heard the phrase dislay case. Is this some kind of Scottish witchery.

Look, I'm only telling you what we called it. I have never (before today) heard the phrase chimney alcove.
"Office Boy"
You are English tho' so I'll let you off.

It's like a sort of vertical radiogram.
Without the radio.
Or the gramaphone.
And it has more glass.
And doors.
Normally shelves as well.
You put stuff in it.
Good stuff.

You've never heard the phrase chimney alcove because a chimney is never, ever, a recess.
It's mental talk, any office boy will tell you that.

You've never heard it because I made it up, as I say, to clarify what sort of alcove I was talking about and it's location.

I have a few really good posts that I'd like to put on show in your dislay case.
Would you have room in amongst all the other good stuff. I can shorten a few of the more wordy posts, if required.
It's mostly self-serving pish anyhow.

To clarify things, it's often better to make them more easily understandable.
Making up mental stuff, like chimney alcoves, obfuscates the matter.
Yes, yes it does :)

Re: How long do you plan on living?
I did.
Jp asked if it could be hieght.
I said it would be a short room, then thought to myself he (or you manker cos I still say you 2 are the same person from different time zones) could then say "No it could be an alcove under the stiars" , so thinking ahead I described it as a "Chimney Alcove" meaning an alcove by the chimney :)
So you see what is actually happening is you are now resorting to using words you know full well I have no idea what they mean and simpply arguin a silly point.
But hey, it's more entertaining than grandstand with Saint 'n Greevsy :ermm:

Perhaps clarify means something different in Sheringham.
Could that be it.

See, you're having a go at me for using words that you don't understand -- but you started it with your chimney alcove shenanegans.
Btw, since when have Wales and Scotchland been in different time zones

Re: How long do you plan on living?
Height. H-E-I-G-H-T.
As per your request via PM. :P
Some days I wish I still had my mod powers, I'd just edit and correct your spelling myself. :P
-
Re: How long do you plan on living?
Exactly my point of what I just said to you.
At school we were taught "I before E eccept after C"
So please to be explaining that one someone?
And I still don't see how it matters.
Jonno

Re: How long do you plan on living?
JP, stop pming Nikki about trivial matters.
Btw, Nikki, I'd correct JP's spelling too if I had the mod powers you previously possessed

It's a rule of thumb, quite a weird one actually.

Re: How long do you plan on living?
86 here
I noticed you can only get 100 if you are already in your late 80s with a healthy life based on this poll. Heh, I guess it's also true in the real world though. People who live to be 100 are pretty healthy at age 70,80, and 90 for old people. I've seen 80 year old men who can still run 2 miles straight, lift heavy weight, and fight much better than 30 year old men. Gods I tell you...

I refuse to comment until you move the apostrophe one place to the east.

Jonno, the apostrophe is used to replace the letters which have been omitted.
"Isn't" is a contraction of "IS NOT". The "o" has been removed. Thus, the apostrophe goes in place of the "o".

Isn't is a contraction of IS NOT. The "o" has been removed. Thus, the apostrophe goes in place of the "o". ISN'T.
Your "Isn't" should really be punctuated, otherwise the sentence is nonsensical.
Strangely you did it with the "o" (twice) indicating you were aware of this.
Slipshod work, Lady.

Doh. I did consider it after hitting the post button, though in laziness chose not to fix it. I figured Jon wouldn't notice, though I should have known you would.
