Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Seven Samurai - I had the old Criterion DVD, but I downloaded the newer 3-disc Criterion release from BitHQ. They did an amazing job restoring the film!

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Invictus- Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman.
Newly elected South African President Nelson Mandela thinks he can unify his troubled country by rallying around the national rugby team in the World Cup.
Apparently, it worked.
Historical dramas are hobbled by the fact that you know ahead of time how they end...that's what Wiki is for.
Good ones overcome this by detailing the "why" and "how", since the "what" is a foregone conclusion.
Invictus ain't a "good one".
Freeman was such an obvious choice to play Mandela that the filmmaker decided there was no need to actually create a character for him, he basically channels Gandhi and spouts fortune cookie proverbs for the whole movie.
Damon- who's position on the rugby team is murky and unexplained- reputedly does a very good Africaaner accent but has little to do save stand in awe of Mandela.
There is no explanation how the team rises from mediocrity to world beater status and improbably wins the world title.
In the movie, apparently the simple fact that Mandela thinks it would be good for the country is all it takes.
That, and some steely jawed posing by Damon somehow elevate the Springboks to greatness.
There is no need to understand the game of rugby- it's possible no one understands the game of rugby- because it really plays little part in the movie.
Yes, the big match is the halo scene of the film but since you have little idea how the Springboks made it that far, the emotional payoff is tepid.
Hard to believe this is a Clint Eastwood project.
Basically, a pointless and wan film, give it a pass.

Last of the Mohicans
A very good movie. I can't speak on whether it's historically accurate or not as I'm a n00b at US's history. A few great looking scenes, a story that wasn't bad and Daniel Day Lewis, who's Badass. Oh, did I mention that he's a wizz with a rifle, lol?
Also watched The Great Dictator on the TV again. Was still as good as I remembered. My fav part is Hynkel and Napaloni trying to shake hands after saluting, lol.
Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Extract- Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Ben Affleck, JK Simmons.
This was a weird one.
I saw previews for this film early last summer and was intrigued enough to keep an eye open for it...but it never seemed to come around.
If it played at all around here, t'wasn't for long.
Anyway, I did finally see it.
Extract tells the story of a company owner (Bateman) who wants to sell out and retire.
His plans are stymied when an employee is injured and threatens to sue.
The core of the film is the relationship between Bateman and his best friend (Affleck), a bartender who's first solution to any problem is drugs.
The bigger the problem, the harder the drugs required.
Works for him but not so much for Bateman.
Extract works a kind of reverse Office Space vibe...the inanities of working life are focused through the perspective of the boss instead of the drone force.
Not as quotably hilarious, Extract is still good for some chuckles and is a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
Not a "must see" but a "should see".

The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.
