Re: Now we have one of these to go with the cats
SnnY
The real advantage is that the pup doesn't shit on the carpet and shag the Vicar's leg when he comes a callin'.
Re: Now we have one of these to go with the cats
You've got a point there :/
Re: Now we have one of these to go with the cats
That's not saying the Vicar doesn't like it. It's just rude not to ask.
Re: Now we have one of these to go with the cats
I'm gratified the vicar doesn't know where I live.
Anyhoo, Goldens stay pretty puppyish all their lives.
We may have had a brea***hrough with the house-breaking already; the missus read on t'web that standard paper-training technique is passe, and after the first couple of days you should pick them up to cement the idea of doing things outside more quickly, so she got rid of the papers two days ago.
Accident-free since then. ;)

When I trained our dog it was dead easy. I picked a code word and taught her that. Then, after food I took her outside and taught her the code word meant "have a crap". After food they can basically crap at will so it's no bother to just take her outside, tell her to do the needfull and that's it, job done.
All this newspaper thing is little short of anthropomorphizing. It's a tame wolf ffs, it wants to know it's place in the pack. It's happier that way. So tell it what to do. Let it know you are the pack leader, then other humans, then it. The dog really will be happier that way. It will also protect your home because that will make it feel that it is contributing to the welfare of it's pack.

True story
I introduced myself as the alpha male at the outset; no worries there.
Her heel is already developing; I've had her out for a couple of mile-long walks already-she only has to rest for a minute or two on the up-hill (it's a pretty good grade).
It was actually kind of funny-I got the impression some of the drivers going by us thought I had one of those gimmick empty leashes, the way the had to look down to see there was a real dog, she's still so tiny.
The "code-word-for-crap" is a solid idea, though.
Consistancy is the watchword.
Re: Now we have one of these to go with the cats
Don't you think "consistancy" is a bit of a long word for a pup?

If you were going to name a pup Consistancy?
Sure. :yup:
