I've found the best way to find a classic film in xvid is just to do a simple search at nzbindex. Usually you can find something. Otherwise I know binaryinvasion used to have a lot of full dvdrs of classics spotted, especially nonscene stuff.
Most of the major p2p encodes get posted by #a.b.hdtv.x264 and are properly named. You can either browse the headers or monitor any decent nzb site to find them.
I agree that abhdtv is probably the best for full blurays, but they may even be worse than HDBits... I'd check out binaryinvasion forums, where there are a lot of experienced spotters pointing out nzbs, especially since the site seems to be moving towards full blurays (they've always been the best for dvdrs - they host #a.b.dvdr).
