Re: Dale farm pikey eviction
Bankers that can't count and sell mortgages to people with no income, travellers that don't travel..
the whole world has gone fucking mental!
A traveller used to move around following seasonal work, harvests, berry picking, fixing pans, sharpening knives (nicking stuff of an occasion obviousment) and never outstaying their welcome for too long. Setting up your own village isn't being a traveller it is being a shanty town dweller.

Having started to live in one place, they obviously build up relationships and a community which becomes hard to leave. Secondly, even if they wanted to keep travelling about, there are no longer the facilities for them on the roadside - there are very few sites where they can legally stay, and verges are often obstructed intentionally by the council, or simply not wide enough to accomodate caravans. The Dale Farm situation has highlighted how few legal Traveller sites there are with spaces - it looks like there aren't actually enough spaces available (certainly in the local counties) for the residents, once evicted, to move to. Another point is the type of accomodation they live in - I can understand why people think they should just move into brick houses as they're obviously not on the move any more, but there is something in their culture, you could say in their blood, that means they feel claustrophobic in a permanent building. I don't know much about it (I've spoken to a few Gypsies) but maybe it's the knowledge that they can move if they need to (and considering their past as well as contemporary prejudices it's something they often have to do, and may feel trapped without). As far as the council's position on Dale Farm is concerned, they are flouting the recommendations of the UN and Amnestry International, and hanging it all on the fact that it's a greenbelt site. It's a fucking scrap yard. And did you know that construction companies no longer have to prioritise building on brownfield sites over green belt?! It's a fucking disgrace - one law for huge corporate bodies and another for the ethnic minority.
My personal experience of them is ''Would you like to buy some chainsaws lads'' shouted out of a white van in an Irish accent. Chainsaws which they've clearly robbed off someone I probably know who's trying to run a business. I guess the only ones that venture out of their holes are the ones that go out robbing / selling robbed stuff. They need a new PR man, or something else. Fucking pikeys.
Actually the headmaster of one of the schools in the Dale farm area was on the radio a few weeks back complaining that the traveller parents seemed to view school as something they could drop their kids at when the mood took them rather than as a permanent fixture of their lives. This mirrors my own experience with them when I was a kid. At the same time every year they'd descend on our school sporadically for several months before fucking off again, leaving it in disarray. For some reason they were giants, and they always came in sibling pairs, and they never seemed to know how old they were. I swear we had some 15 year olds in year 7. They pretty much spent their entire time bullying and fighting, and none of them could fucking read properly which made lessons interesting for everyone else. Parents didn't seem to give a shit. You don't need to read to procreate and lay tarmac I guess.
Anyway I digress....if travellers didn't actually erect these permanent buildings they seem to be so afraid of they wouldn't keep falling foul of planning law. If they did actually live in temporary accommodation on the land they bought no-one would stop them. It's the fact they are building permanent structures that is causing so many problems.
Bottom line is, they just have an insular culture and don't want to change but want the world to change for them. It's an understandable human characteristic, but hardly one that has any future.
