I thought the same when I discovered it two years ago, but look at that, it's still standing. There are many other music streaming services out there, anyway (although I've found Grooveshark to be the best in terms of content and usability).
I've even disabled my ad blocker for GS - they provide an awesome service and bandwidth isn't free, so they can really use the revenue from those unobtrusive Google text ads.

Re: the best way to get single music tracks
I use Grooveshark for listening and beemp3 for downloading.

I've started using GS more and more. Wasn't a big fan of it at first, but the service has grown and it really is excellent. One of the few services that works abroad when I'm working. I just wish Spotify worked everywhere and the same goes for Last.FM/Pandora. Anyone know of any other music streaming services that work internationally/globally?

Re: the best way to get single music tracks
For those of you who dosn't already know about it, Mulve is probably the easiest and fastest way to download single music files.
Read about & download it here: http://mulve.com/

From what I know, they don't store the files themselves. The bandwith needed for that is probably not possible to get. The creators says that they intex alot of other sites, most of them may be russian. I actually don't know what to believe.

A site called "vkontakte.ru" and its server park.

Oops, some bug, I made a double post.

Based on what?
I've never even heard of it until this afternoon. Soulseek is still an excellent place to grab single tracks, but What.cd might just be the best in my opinion these days.

I wish I understood how it necessarily works. How is it getting the tracks/etc.? What is it sort of like rapidshare based or something? Also, quality, etc. I don't fully understand the program.

Re: the best way to get single music tracks
Mulve looks like this; http://www.filez.st/screenshots/65911500Mulve_v103.jpg
Skiz, you can download a track within 5 seconds and I've found everything I've looked for, it's just that good.
Hiccup, the site get the trackers from other sites, for example vkontakte.ru. As you can see on the picture, it's possible to sort the tracks by Bitrate. I have only downloaded ~ 15 trackers, all of them were found in 320 kbit/s. I think it's like a really simple, easier, faster, smarter program than for example LimeWire, SoulSeek or Bearshare.

I think you mean "tracks"?
By the way, just like Skizo, I wasn't aware this program existed until yesterday, also. Looks like I missed the original post where it was mentioned. After giving it a try (to see where it was getting the tracks from using SmartSniff), I have to say it's really fast and easy to use. Could very well replace BeeMP3.com for me if the music archive is big enough.

Yep, that's right!

Re: the best way to get single music tracks
regarding Mulve:
If Mulve gets all its files from a single server location (vkontakte.ru) the record industry won't have a very hard time snuffing it out. Maybe the only reason it's still alive is because they have too many other battles going on right now.
After the rash of spyware-infested P2P software that came like a plague after the shutdown of Napster, I think that many of us might not be eager to jump headfirst into installing another application until we know a little more about it.
I've got to wonder why they made this into a oldschool software client, instead of setting up a flash-enabled web frontend, like it seems just about everyone else is doing these days.

Re: the best way to get single music tracks
Mulve is dope.30 downloads, top speeds and none failed.
-
Re: the best way to get single music tracks
http://hyper-hyper.appspot.com - i just made it.
+ very simple and basic, no ads suffocating you.
- dont work well with not well known tracks.
+ http download from server.

I concur. That's part of the reason why I was/am so hesitant to try it out. Had a friend try it out, though. It's kind of like a program based hypem/elbow/etc. It found several obscure tracks, which I thought was cool, but the quality seems to be mostly on the 128 side, if you don't mind that sort of thing. I'd only pop this thing out if I couldn't find something elsewhere and had exhausted all other alternatives/options (i.e. Google, SoulSeek, torrents, etc.)

What do you think they could exactly do? As far as I know, copyright laws in Russia don't cover digital media.
-
Re: the best way to get single music tracks
I hope it lasts long enough because this is just a great piece of software . It does what it says , great content with great speeds.

I suggest you look up the history of AllOfMP3, the Russian MP3 download site that thought they were untouchable because they were in compliance with Russian law -- despite being at the very top of the record industry's (s)hit list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AllOfMP3
Killing off Mulve should be a lot easier than killing off AllOfMP3, which required an intense international effort approaching the level of the D-Day invasion or the Manhattan Project. Mulve can survive only as long as they stay "under the radar" :)

Hey, thanks for the link, I wasn't aware of that. However, as far as I can see, AllOfMP3 sold music tracks, while Mulve lets you download them for free. Isn't the former case, i.e. "profiting from piracy", a way more serious offense for the RIAA and such?

Re: the best way to get single music tracks
Private trackers are just as safe as public trackers, as soon as they (Riaa / Mpaa) get in then the they'll monitor the site and its done for, basically its about 50/50 chance of getting caught. Filesharing private trackers have all the stats / ip's/ user info logged so basically you can bet that if that site gets taken down the users would be offected aswell (most of the time they just go after admin though)

Not all of them. Some don't keep IPs, either because they don't want to or the source code they run on doesn't have that capability.
Since you appear to be quite worried about data logging, then consider being banned from What.cd a favor. They even log your daily ratio stats.

Re: the best way to get single music tracks
Now that Mulve is dead, any good alternatives for single track downloads? I got Pirate (the open source clone) but its an outdated build. It says theres an update available, but it can't update, I'm assuming because the website and google code pages are not exactly 'up'... The old build seems to work OK though...

Pymaxe, BeeMP3.com, Ares.

Great post . I will try them .

Re: the best way to get single music tracks
Mulve didn't really die. All those servers full of MP3s are still there, waiting to be leeched. :)
Mulve was just a frontend that connected to the Russian social networking site called Vkontakte. You can join the site directly at http://vk.com and use the MP3 sharing features.
I recently joined and uploaded a few MP3s to the site. It's a little tedious doing it one MP3 at a time (hopefully there's a shortcut) but at least there are now a few more titles that are not in Russian.

True, there are two alternative clients born from its ashes already:

Re: the best way to get single music tracks
I've been using DC++ for years now. Lots of good public hubs with singles. Plus the speeds are awesome.

Re: the best way to get single music tracks
http://songr.co.cc is nice alternative for searching music tracks
